CC to UC BERKELEY!

im a high school senior. i have a 3.0 hs gpa, and i plan on either attending SFSU next year, or a community college and then transferring to CAL

Who here knows how hard it is to get into UC berkeley from a community college? what kind of GPA should i get in college? i want to major in business administration at berkeley, which is pretty competitive from what i hear.

I want to pull of straight A's in community college, but if that doesn't guarantee me a spot at berkeley, i will be pretty disappointed bc i could have just went to san francisco state and done business there.

so yeah PLEASE anybody out there? help me out! = ) any advice is appreciated.

It's very, very hard to get into Haas. Pulling "of" straight A's in community college doesn't guarantee you a spot.

Also, it will be essentially impossible to transfer from SFSU to Haas (just in case you were considering that).

how many econ and business students are there that want to go to ucla or cal. no wonder this major(S) are so damn competitive.

As a transfer to a UC, your high school GPA will not be factored into the admission process. How difficult it will be for you to transfer depends on what major you plan to pursue at UC. For less competitive programs, a 3.2+ might be fine for Berkeley, while for more competitive programs a 3.7+ may be more appropriate. Plus, you need to build a strong foundation of ECs and to write a stellar personal statement.

Haas (Berkeley's business school) is unlike any other program. For instance, Haas requires a supplementary application. Usually, less than a 3.7 is considered to low. Furthermore, Haas only accepts 8% of transfers. In order to decide whether or not to transfer there, I would recommend reading through the other Haas threads and visiting the Haas website. That should give you a fairly good idea if this is the path you want to pursue.

I think a 3.2 is a bit low, but otherwise your info is very helpful.

why don't you just go to a CCC and if you don't get into berk you'll have other options (ucla? if you get a 4.0) i mean...won't going to a CCC give you a lot more options than just goin to state?

u can end up at sf state anyway... nothing lost going to a CC

It's true that you'll have a lot more doors open to choose from, but you'd be letting go of a chance at the "freshman experience" of your life. Many say it's just a waste of time, consisting of drinking and partying, but for many, it's the year that really makes or breakes on'es character, one's outset as a person. I, myself, am a community college student, and am happy to be where I am now, to have made the friends I met here and all, but I'll always wonder what life would've been like had I gone straight to a 4-year school (which I could have).

You can, of course, say that about anything. You can spend a lot of time wondering about "what-ifs."

the thing with haas is that even the most qualified of the qualified aren't even able to get in. achieving a 4.0 GPA now seems to be the only thing acceptable there. the space is just so intensely limited there and the competition is brutal. remember, the hard part about college isnt getting matriculated there, it's getting a degree. The competition at Berkeley alone is tough, and you want to go to where the smartest students at Berkeley are?

I too was in your situation. I was considering applying to Haas because I wanted to pursue majoring in business administration. After I soon realized I had little to no chance (i have a 4.0 with great EC's and leadership roles. yah, its that tough), I didn't want to jeopardize my dream of going to Cal. I changed my major to English and would now like to pursue a career in Journalism and an acceptance letter from Berkeley.

The advice I would give to you is this. If you really want to major in business, go to a CC and transfer to UCLA and complete your undergrad there. Even though going to a CC kinda sucks, ok, it REALLY sucks, in the end you'd be glad you went there and transfered to a top university. All that time at a CC will pay off, I promise.

ccstudent: thanks a lot! your info was helpful

and to bokchoi, i see what your saying and appreciate the input but theres always something to be given up when making any decision. someone who gets the freshman experience at sfsu can wonder 'what if i had gone to a community college and transferred to UC berkeley? how great would that have felt to make my family proud and graduate from the best public school in the country'

u know what im saying?

thanks socalgal. im really starting to think that haas isn't for me. i don't wanna work my ass off in CC and still get rejected. any program where a 4.0 can be rejected is just too risky. maybe i can go to sfsu, try it out and study international business. then i can apply to haas for their mba program can't i? is that also super competitive?

I think maybe people are hyping the difficutly of 1)getting into Haas and 2) how hard haas really is. Its totally do-able if you work very hard and catch a few breaks. I'd say go to a ccc and shoot for a 3.8ish gpa. Then cross your fingers, say your prayers, kiss a leprecon, and recite the Cal fight song five times. You'll be golden like oski.

As the title of my last post implies, I was only being the devil's advocate, just trying to offer a different perspective so YOU can make the best decision for yourself. Personally, I think going to a CC is the better option for sure. Besdies, SFSU isn't really of the greatest academic repute, unlike UC Berkeley (as you've pointed out).

lol gentleman.

are you at haas?

No, but I know some people that either are now or used to be haas-holes.

Gentleman, can you please state what the stats were like for those people you know who got into Haas?

I don't know what they were. A few of them were already there when I met them and it never really came up what their stats were. They were all smart and did well in school, but they weren't (aren't) super duper brilliant people.

I hate to be a downer, but also don't expect to get all A's in community college. When I started at my CC, I thought "Yeah, i'll totally get straight A's and then transfer to Cal". Unfortunately, it's not as easy as it looks! Plus, Haas is INCREDIBLY selective, and as others have pointed out, it takes more than just a 4.0 to get in.

But hey, you might be a lot smarter and a lot more prepared than everyone else, so go for it.
