I'm moving to LA in January and looking for a nice CC. I was thinking about SMC b/c it offers some of the prereq courses not offered at my current CC. But SMC looks crazy crowded. What other CC's in the LA area are decent, yet not as crowded as SMC?

Some other colleges you can look into are El Camino College (Torrance), Pasadena City College (Pasadena), Glendale College (Glendale), and LA City College (Hollywood). Then again, due to the recent budget cuts all schools have experienced, many classes have been cut, causing large and crowded classes. So you may experience a ‘crowded’ atmosphere at most community colleges here in LA.

In what context do you mean “crazy crowded?”

I attend SMC and I can answer questions you have if you like.

LA is huge, what part of LA are you moving to?

I go to pcc gcc and smc and gcc is the easiest to get all you classes at and has the most patient faculty and staff. If I had to pick it would be gcc.

SMC is not crazy crowded, well not more crowded than the other big CC’s

SeeHerFly, I think the best factor to decide which community college you’re going to is location – in other words, the closest school to where you will be living. Otherwise, from what I know about SMC, it’s not much more crowded than any of the other major community colleges.

I guess I am intimidated by the size of SMC. I have never seen a CCC offer so many classes, almost all of which are full. I have also never come across a CCC with so many different starting weeks. The CCC I currently attend is considered big and we have plenty of problems with parking, overcrowded classrooms, and ridiculously long lines for everything. And it’s not even half the size of SMC. If I am making inaccurate assumptions please let me know.

And I am moving to downtown LA fashion district.

If you are moving to Downtown LA, the schools that are closest to you are LACC (East Hollywood), Glendale College (Glendale), and Pasadena City College (Pasadena). Of course, keep in mind that there is more often than not traffic on our freeways, especially during rush hour.

But in any event, thanks to budget cuts, classes at most community colleges have become full. Even at the school I attend (which isn’t a particularly ‘overcrowded’ school) most of the classes were packed at the start of the semester. One of my classes originally had room for 45 students, but the instructor added so many students that we had 60+ students and had to move to a larger lecture hall.

Ultimately, it’s your decision. But don’t let ‘overcrowding’ factor into your decision. Most community colleges have packed classrooms and long lines. It’s not restricted to only SMC, and ultimately, it’s not as bad as it seems. Since your first choice was SMC, I would suggest that you go to Santa Monica College, even though it’s a bit of a drive from Downtown LA.

at PCC 98% of our classes were full when school started. No adds or drops really this semester it was sad. I wish I could have chosen GCC from the beginnnig because I am able to get the classes that I cant at PCC at GCC.

I think the answer is pretty simple. Just go to SMC…trust me, it rocks!!

Move to Orange County instead and go to Orange Coast College!!

If you’re intimidated by the size of SMC just wait till you transfer…

i expect and embrace crowding at the UC…but not JC b/c i only plan to attend JC in SoCal for one class

I think SkWz was referring to the size of the campus, not the number of people there.
