CCC to CCC course Transferability

Okay so this question is for my gf.

She started her college years at one CCC (Victor Valley) and took a semester there, completed about 10 units in that semester, including An English Course, a Child Development course and 1-2 other classes, she got all B's.

But she didn't like it there so she moved and came to my CCC ( Moorpark) upon initially transferring she brought in her transcript from the other college to get credit for the classes she already completed but the counselor said non of the courses were Transferrable and she would get 0 credit.

So looking into it it looks like at least one of the courses (English) is Transferrable via Assist.org I have yet to look through the other courses, but because she was told by the counselor that she wouldn't receive any credit for any classes at the other college she took the class again at our current CCC and got the same grade (B).

So my question is if she were to get the credit to which she is legally entitled for the classes she took at the other college could that be possible? To have essentially two of the same classes on your transfer grades, and if so how would you recommend we go about getting her all the credit that she is due from her other coursework if in fact it is Transferrable?

Thanks!

Bump bump

When you say transferable, do you mean they are CSU/UC transferable? If they are CSU/UC transferable, your girlfriend doesn’t need to do anything to get “credit” for them. The CSU/UC she is applying to will give her credit for them. Just because a class is CSU/UC, doesn’t mean that it is transferable from one community college to another. I ran into this problem with an English course that I took. Community College A had a 3 unit 101 course, so did Community College B. But CC B would not accept CC A’s course. If I wanted to graduate with an associates from CC B, I would not have been able to without taking an English course at CC B. HOWEVER, CC B can still certify my IGETC/UC GE/CSU GE completion, since the English course IS transferable to UC/CSU.

So she does not need to retake the courses if they are indeed CSU/UC transferable.

Yeah they’re UC/CSU Transferrable.

How is this possible that something can transfer to a UC or CSU but not to another CCC?

CCs aren’t all part of the same system. Each district operates as it’s own individual private company, expect they accept public funding and are subject to government regulations.

Yeah but I thought they Had some sort of reciprocity

California Community Colleges.

So you’re saying that even if another CC in the same state offers the exact same class whoever is looking at transcripts can decide on a whim whether or not to give you credit for your other coursework?

That doesn’t sound right at all

The desired end result is that the university WILL give credit. Don’t sweat the CC not giving credit, unless the goal is an AA from said CC.

@shellz - True, but what happens when you’re forced like my gf was to repeat core classes like English?

Will the University double count that because she is due the credit?

No of course they won’t because they can’t. And the CC counselor at the current campus said the UC’s and we will not count this so you have to retake it, but it says it plain and simple on Assist that it will.

CC’s don’t just decide to not accept other CC’s classes on a whim. They take into consideration the curriculum for the class at their CC and decide if a class at another CC is similar enough to be acceptable. Often times you can take the course syllabus from your old college to the dept chair at your new college to see if they will give you credit for the class.

Other than that, make sure you have the correct year of articulation for when the course was taken. Print up the assist.org articulation agreement, and then take that into the counselor. No one can force your girlfriend to retake a class she has already taken…

@knhofto - But they can refuse to Grant credit and insist that no 4 year will grant credit either

@Matt4200 … “And the CC counselor at the current campus said the UC’s and we will not count this so you have to retake it, but it says it plain and simple on Assist that it will.” I was going to suggest that perhaps you misheard or misinterpreted what the counselor said. But that seems pretty cut and dry. Sorry to hear that your gf had to go through that, and thanks for posting.

So is she able to get double credit if it turns out the CC normally would accept it?
