So far, son has acceptances at both as a percussion performance major. His love is classical music and his goal is to play in a symphony. CCM has Percussion Group Cincinnati and Md has the NSO timpanist and percussionist. No news on music scholarship money yet although CCM offered the $2K Cincinnatus. Obviously, money will play a part and there are auditions still to come, but I would love to hear any experience you've had with either. We liked both.

I think your son needs to ask himself if he’s interested in playing percussion or timpani. That may help sway him one way or another. How often is the percussion staff in the school? My son has eliminated some of his choices because the staff is only on campus once a week. Who has a stronger orchestra? That will be a big learning factor for your son. Where else is he auditioning. That may help with the decision in the end. Does he have a teacher that could steer him in one direction or another? I will be in the same situation next year. My son is a junior percussionist but he’s not sure if he will pursue performance or education. He’s not sure what he’s interested in doing. He has worked with the teachers he’s most interested in auditioning for. It will really come down to who he likes working with best.

@bigdjp - your son may wish to reconsider adding back in programs where the professors are only there once a week. Some of the best teachers teach at more than one school, and this is the norm. How often does he study privately with his teacher now?

As long as there is lots of activity for him in addition to a once a week private lesson, I imagine it would be fine if his primary teacher is not in residence.
