CC's Top 10 Most Interesting College Decisions 2011 (vol. 2)

My friend was deciding between Redlands vs. Oregon State.

My son has narrowed it to Penn vs. Pomona. (I think)

Sigh. Can’t wait till May 1st!

Way back in the day, I applied to 3 schools: Lafayette, William & Mary, and UNC-CH. I have no idea what I thought I was looking for, but apparently it was somewhere on the East Coast.

I’ve heard of a few Northeastern vs Elon. (Why does Elon keep coming up on this thread?) The only connection I see there is engaged learning.

This is a fun thread!

Oberlin vs College of Wooster vs Skidmore

mathmom,

That’s really interesting. Were there other reasons that he chose CMU? Harvard actually has a pretty good CS program (top 5 or 10 in the NRC ranking, top 20 in US News). A Harvard prof won the Turing Award this year, also.

Well I’m stewing between UVA and Penn. People thought that was weird, but I think it’s a bit more normal than some I’m seeing lol.

And the verdict is Whitman  That was definitely an interesting thought process to watch, especially considering the price was equal.

I’ve got a friend who is likely picking Montana State University - Bozeman over Harvard, because of a scholarship and the skiing opportunities.

I’m not sure I’m buying Montana State over Harvard! Are you making this one up???

I’m deciding between UW-Madison, Hendrix, and Wesleyan…

Good friend of ours – Cal State Chico vs. UCB. Is not a partier. Picked Chico.

S1 – UChicago vs. MIT for CS/math.
S2 – Tufts vs. UChicago.

Most interesting decision from my friends is Miami (FL) vs. Lafayette. I’m predicting Miami.

does Georgia Tech vs. Carnegie Mellon count? haha

If you’re considering the CMU College of Fine Arts, it does! :)

My daughter’s friend –
Colorado School of Mines vs. Linfield College (Oregon).

She’ll attend CO School of Mines, studying engineering physics.

I have a friend who chose University of Baghdad over Princeton, and yes his last name was Hussein  [remember he was our guy and CIA is famous for sending spawns to Princeton]

How about Eastman School of Music v.s Caltech engineering? :p

I actually believe this one. One of S’s best friends is graduating this spring with a BS in Physics, but he spends half his time in the music building because he is a very talented instrumentalist (in h.s. he was rated the top player on his instrument at All-State tryouts 2 years in a row). He’s going on to a graduate degree in Acoustical Engineering… or something to do with acoustics.

OK, now this is just getting downright weird.

I was going to claim weirdness on this one too, but I also know someone who’s both a biotech genius and a conservatory-level trumpeter, as well as an Ph.D. Biologist from MIT who’s a pro banjo virtuoso and has toured with Springsteen. I’d suspect that tech whizzes may often have highly-developed musical skills.

However, if Eastman vs. Caltech is for real Mixter, it’s clearly the new #1 !

We are still waiting for RPI- I want that #1 title (for Hampshire v. RPI). ;)

Choosing between USC, Swarthmore and University of Hong Kong.
