Cell phone plan idea

So I rarely use a cell phone, but still use it enough that I need one, maybe once every other day, so I tried looking for the best plan to go with for when I'm at cornell.

Thing is, even if I don't use my cell phone alot, I know when my parents call me, I will probably be spending 10 minutes+ on the phone, so I got to thinking whats the best thing to do.

Att has a pay as you go plan for 25 cents per minute. Sounds steep, but again, I barley ever use my phone, problem is, for those calls with my parents, the plan inst so great. So....what if I got an iphone 2g off ebay for $200 and put a wifi calling app on it? The whole campus has wifi, and calls through something called icall are only 2 cents a minute.

Is this a good idea? Whenever I'm on campus and in wifi range, I have 2 cents per minute calls. If I ever leave campus, then only then will I use the 25 cents per minute on the att service.

Or alternatively, is there any cheaper phone that could handle a wifi calling app like skype?

You have to think about the fact that you have a 10gig/month limit though. I don’t know how much bandwidth it uses, but VoIP I’d imagine uses a decent amount. A 10+ minute call of audio being transferred back and forth could be a pretty good amount.

But then again, I could be wrong.

How are you gonna get in contact with friends who wanna go out? Txting seems like almost a necessity…

I’m pretty sure we calculated it last year, and if my memory serves me, skype uses about 1 GB for 60+ hours of calls.
