not sure about the clocks in the p-ways.... will have to ask about that one... however, with all the "bracing" and "eyes in the boat," wonder if they dare even try and catch a glimpse at the clocks even if they are there and running....

in any event, they will get up before the crack of dawn, work up a sweat before the sun arrives on the horizon, and won't see their racks again until lights out...which can't come too soon! Anyway, time never seems to go fast enough on the yard- unless it is liberty, which flies by in a blink of an eye!

if you do send a watch, suggest a cheap water-proof one for plebe summer...once the ac year starts, you can send along a nicer one....

phones, and anything else electronic, will be taken away for plebe summer.... cell phones get returned around the start of the ac year...

forget i-pods.... not for plebes.... makes getting to Herndon that much sweeter!
music, dvd's, etc.... have to be earned, and come rare indeed (you might get media privilages after a good football win...for a night.....) ... this is very company-dependent... you will be able to enjoy TV and music at sponsors home- if you get the liberty to go!

not all doom and gloom folks- you would be amazed at how these kids keep themselves entertained!

I don't think they can take the clocks down....but they can definitely slip t-shirts over them...last I checked, not too many people have x-ray vision.

OK, if they cover the clocks in the passageways, how do the plebes know when to start chow calls? We always did it the second the clock "clicked" to 10 mins b4 or 5 mins b4. They do still do chow calls, don't they???

^^^^^
Plebes still do chow calls. And USNA1985 is correct about the use of the passageway clocks for chow calls. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to do chow calls without clocks.

While a bit off-topic, I find it truly scary that I can still do chow calls today. Still remember the order. Still remember the "ending" of the 5-minute call -- "all hands are reminded to shut off all lights, running water . . . " Wonder if they now add "cell phones, computers, . . . ?" :)

I beleive this thread was about watches and clocks for Plebe Summer, not the Academic year. The clocks in the passage ways for some companies were covered during Plebe Summer.

Yes, but at least in my day, plebe summer was when we learned to do chow calls. I suppose you could do them in a vacuum but it seems a bit pointless. Still, it is what it is today. I'm sure those from the 50s and 60s thought some of the stuff we did or didn't do was a bit strange as well.

They still learn to do them but instead of looking at a clock someone tells then when. When it comes to what, when and where they are at the mercy of the cadre.

I wouldn't worry about his backside.... he won't have any use for it anyway...

they don't get to sit on it
they have to "bet" it away
and they are lucky they get permission to use it at all for their daily constitutional! ;)
