Cell service at Cornell

Hi. I moved into north campus last week, and I have discovered that there is spotty cell service in some parts of campus. I rarely get above 3 bars.

I curently have tmobile, which I have heard is not the greatest in Ithaca. I asked my floormates, and they have full bars with tmobile and verizon. Of course it makes sense for me to simply change my cell service, but I am currently on a family plan whose contract expires in Jan. If I am to change my service, I want to do it in the cheapest way possible. Att's $25 plan sounds ideal, since it has enough minutes and unlimited texting. I don't need data, because I have campus wifi.

I don’t know about ATT but with tmobile you HAVE to have a data plan on a smart phone. I’m not sure if ATT does the same thing but they might…

I think most major carriers require you to have a data plan with a smartphone. I think I’ve heard you can do those prepaid phones, some (all?) of which use towers from major carriers like Verizon.

Honestly, my family switched from ATT to Verizon because the coverage for Verizon is so much better. ATT might be better now since they put a tower on north since I moved. I think the general consensus is that Verizon in general has the best coverage (not just Ithaca).

ATT, Verizon, Virginmobile

ATT: iphone
Verizon: android
Virginmobile: unlim data, limited calls plan (much cheaper if solo account. we’re talking $35/mth instead of $50/60 /mth)

Verizon also offers the iPhone now. My son has not had any problems with cell service in the Ithaca area. We had a preexisting Verizon family plan, so lucked out.
