ch@nc3 m3. !'ll chance y0u b@ck.

What are my chances for (in order of interest) Columbia, Berkeley, UPenn (dad went there, grandpa teached there), and UChicago? I'm going to major in political science.

Me: white, Jewish, female, junior. I go to a Top 500 public high school in an old money Midwest town.

GPA: 3.95/4.33
ACT: 30 (I realize that isn't too lovely. It was my first try, no clinics or whatever, kinda zoned out in the middle of the test, aiming for a 33.)
SAT II: US History, 740. Took Bio M, expecting low-600s. Taking World History (guessing mid/high-700s), Lit (mid-700s), and French (low-700s).
APs: smelly 4 in US, sophomore year
Rank: school doesn't do that

Schedule:
Freshman year (don't remember my grades for this year, but I had a 3.95 GPA):
Algebra I CP, Honors Earth Science, French II, Tutorial (study hall thing), Honors World History, Honors Freshman English, Gym

Sophomore year:
Photo I (A), Honors Biology (A), Honors Am. Lit. (B+ to A-), Adv. Journalism I (A), AP US (A, A+), Geometry I (A-, B+ all year, B third quarter), French III (A, and a smelly A- 4th quarter)

Junior year:
AP Euro (A+), AP Lang (will prolly get an A- this quarter), AP Micro (A+), Adv. Journalism II (A), Honors French IV (A-), Chemistry (A+), Alg. II CP (B+)

Senior year (what I will probably be taking):
AP Gov, AP Bio, AP French (or Latin I if there's no AP French available next year), AP Lit, Adv. Journalism III, Pre-Calc, Art History, AP Photo, probably some law classes

Extracurriculars/clubs (no real order):
-Journalism (7-12). Our newspaper is literally one of the best newspapers in the entire country. I'm one of the best- if not the best- writer on our paper. Right now, I'm assistant editor of the features section, but I should be editor-in-chief or at least managing editor next year. My columns are published in the local paper and I shadowed the editor-in-chief of a regional paper over the summer. I went to journalism camp since 8th grade, and. I've gotten awards for my writing.
-French Society (10-12), President and Founder. We organize a bunch of funlicious activities and charity stuff.
-Debate Camp (10-12). Two weeks, day camp. We don't have a debate team at my school. I'm going form either that or a Politics Club (latter= less work).
-National Honors Society (11-12), Cum Laude chapter.
-DECA (11-12). It's a business thing. We have a pretty good team.
-IMPACT (9-12). Charity stuff.
-Varsity Gymnastics (9). (hellzz yeah...?)
-Assistant directed youth theatre (froshie year, age limit of involvement).

Volunteer:
-Young Women for Change (10-12). Had a fundraiser and made $5,000 for a local women's charity.
-SOAR Tutoring (10-12). Once a week, I tutor low-income Detroit pre-schoolers in reading and writing.
-Sunrise Assisted Living (11-12). Bingo calluh!
-I need to do more soup kitchen-y stuff, don't I?

Honors:
-Best Affirmative Speech, Highest Overall Score at Debate Camp
-Third Place in Column Writing from MIPA
-our paper as a whole pretty much collects awards like a whore collects STDs
-I realize I don't have much... this is all from sophomore year

Job:
-Cashier at Kroger (11-whenever I get fired/quit in an angry storming out-way). Holla.

Essay:
-Will blow everyone's minds

What are my chances? Do remember I'd be a little less immature with the admissions officers ;). Thanks guys!

bumppppppppppppp

I don’t know anything about chancing, but I’m a little worried that you said your grandpa “teached” there…

Oh my god, I just noticed that hahaha. Pretend that didn’t happen everyone who is about to read my post.

Get that ACT up to a 33, and you’re solid everywhere!

Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1004999-duke-ed-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

bumpdedump

I think you have a solid chance at all of those schools! You can bring up your ACT a tiny tiny bit to make your chances more secure BUT a 30 is still great with your grades, etc. Just rock your essays and i’d say you’re in at most.

Columbia- Reach
Berkeley- High Match
Penn- Reach
Chicago- Low Reach

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1015320-chance-me-top-schools-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Your volunteering work looks good and will help and so will your ECs…plus since your grandpa “teached” at UPenn, that may REALLY help…if u decide to put that

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1014473-junior-needs-help.html#post1065752520</a></p>

if you get better act scores…
columbia - reach
penn - high match? (the legacy will help a lot)
berkeley - high match/match (out of state is tough)
chicago - low reach (they are pretty unpredictable)

chance back!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1015920-chance-indecisive-kid-shooting-top-tier-schools.html#post1065752723</a></p>

i’d say

columbia –> reach
penn –> match
berkeley –> high reach
chicago –> low reach

please chance me backk :)

Great GPA.

I definitely agree with ace1293, except I would not consider penn a match. There is definitely nothing spectacular in your ECs or anything on your app that makes an admission officer say “This person has got to be here”, this is with regards to the elite/ivy schools btw.

Also, I noticed your work load isn’t as rigorous as strong applicants applying to these schools in terms of math and science. Clearly you are not a math or science oriented person, but a lot of people who want to do poli sci still do well in AP math and science classes, make sure you show the admission officers you are well rounded.

Also, is the assistant editor in chief your only leadership position?

As you probably know, 30 is definitely not going to help you (will hurt you) as a white female applicant.

If you do bring it up to a 33, I think you will get into at least one of those top schools.

Good luck!

Bump!!!
