I have two loves: science and art

Science-- besides all this stuff i just have extreme passion for learning about science and will talk about that in essays

science bowl competition team (that one was pretty embarrasing to tell my art friends)
Volunteer work in chemistry lab
Chosen to travel to Hawaii Europe and Southeast Asia to discuss current issues in science with leading researchers around the world (plus we taught Malaysian school teachers labs to teach to their students…which just sounds cool)
2 years of research at UCF in evolutionary biology--mapping the evolutionary history of a huge group of poorly studied and fatal pitvipers (by sequencing their DNA…which takes like 1000000 years of my life) to show that they are too distantly related for one vial of antivenin to treat all of their bites. When I’m completely finished I will publish it, but so far at science fairs I won:
first place regional science fair and various special awards
sixth place state science fair
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Finalist (which was awesome and made me love science even more than ever)

So also I LOVE art
2 yrs AP art
National Art Honor Society President(takes up my entire life)
Maryland Institute College of Art summer residency program graduate (a month of taking rigorous drawing and oil painting classes for college credit
Freelance portrait artist
And ive launched a new program with a woman from hospice which allows young artists to share their talents with terminally ill hospice patients—really cool.
First place Disney chalk painting competition(against professionals_
Best in Show at a major regional festival
Awards at other festivals and shows and selected for exhibition at a ton of juried shows and a special gallery at the Orlando museum of art.
But no amount of awards can really speak to the sheer amount of hours and energy and sleepless nights that I put into this. It seriously has taken over my life. I am going to double major art with biochemistry.

Plus im a bona fide granola girl.
I do a lot of volunteering at the Humane Society and other animal rights organizations and so I started a club to get other kids together to do similar things and we've contributed to some very worthy causes.
Treasurer of Amnesty International (4 yrs)
Secretary then Vice Pres of Young Democrats (4 yrs) and I was very involved in the Kerry campaign but unfortunately thats not one of my most successful endeavors

I work at Jo Ann 18 hrs a week…sell paintings and do portrait work..tutor for AP chem..(all so that I can pay for all the crazy travel costs ive incurred)

That’s all the important stuff. I am a good writer and my essays will be interesting.
Im awesome at interviews but my guidance rec wont knock any socks off. 2 teacher recs will be great and one might suck. Is it okay if I send one from my AP chem teacher? She knows me best and can really talk about my love for science, plus I volunteered for her. Its just that she taught me in 10th and a lot of schools don’t like that.

THANK YOU FOR ANY FEED BACK! I know getting peoples opinions on something that often is unpredictable is a little pointless, but im anxious and curious and I just want SOMETHING to go off of. I am regretting not applying early I LOVE WILLIAMS!!!!
THANNNNNNKSSSSS

omg i just realized how long that was.. Sorry! please try to answer anyway, or at least tell me something cool about williams that I probably dont know.

overboard, Your profile is good for Williams:

Grades, rank scores good (except what's with that AP English score? If you really expect it to be so low maybe you shouldn't take it.)

Two good recommendations. You only need two; don't submit a weak rec! I would go for your 10th grade chemistry teacher especially if she could mention some of the current activities you're involved in.

Excellent ECs.The combination of interest in art and science is appealing to Williams.

Assuming that you'll write a compelling essay, you're all set. I don't think Williams interviews or at least if they do it's not a significant factor.

I hope you will be submitting a slide portfolio of your work. I'd suggest that you put together an art package with your slides, a resume of your accomplishments, a personal statement, a one or two media articles about the community work you're doing, and perhaps a recommendation from an art instructor. You could do the same for your science activities.

Have you actually visited Williamstown? You won't find many opportunities to feed your retail addition there. There's a lot of culture and arts related activity but shopping is virtually non-existent.

The AP english score is crazy.... I have no idea how that happened. That was the one AP I was SURE i would get a 5 on. I scored an extremely high 5 on the AP practice test we took in school, and I have the highest grade in my current AP english class. I hope it doesnt give too negative an effect.

Im having my AP english teacher from this year write me a reccomendation, and she will talk about how I'm a far from average english student

I did visit Williamstown and I LOVED it. Not only did I love the mountains and seclusion, I thought the Clark museum was one of the highlights of my summer and would dream of being able to visit it again.

Thankyou for the advice, and I actually HATE shopping, i just included that line because it reminded me of a rap song from about a year ago.

if you don't get in, I am not sure who will. I mean, your stats are good enough for anywhere, Intel finalist is absolutely huge, as is the national leadership in the arts ... you seem to fit the Williams profile to a T (art, science, granola, strong academics overall). The only possible issue is that, given how well you fit into the Williams ideal, you may be competing against a lot of like-minded applicants. Still, most of them won't have national-level achievements in either science or art, let alone both. I have no idea how you have time to do everything you do. I'd say that you have about an 80 percent chance of admission and are probably one of the strongest non-minority, non-tipped-athlete applicants in the pool. If not Williams, I'm sure you will have no shortage of great options as long as your recs and essays are up to snuff.

I think you're in.

Not because of the scores or rank, but because of one thing Williams truly appreciates- passion.

this makes me want to cry. good luck!

Momrath has really good suggestions about supplemental materials. Be very careful about not sending in too much material. Edit. Think it over. Edit it again. Avoid any duplications. Use summaries and point out highlights, rather than providing lots of details.

It was from a Williams admissions officer that I first heard a saying I've since heard in many other settings: "Generally, the thicker the file, the thicker the applicant."

If it worked with your materials, a clever approach might be to highlight your science interests and experiences through what you pick for your portfolio, and your artistic side in the way you present your science (good design, etc.).
The idea would be to get added impact from each part of your submissions and thereby be able to submit less than you might otherwise.

Good luck. Both the art (studio and history) and the sciences are amazing at Williams.

Your profile is simliar to mine, except of course I don't have all those national awards. I think you will definitely be accepted.
