Challenge You Overcame + Top Schools...

For college and scholarship essays, I am continually running into the “write about a challenge you overcame.” For the first 15 years of my life I lived with my parents and younger sister. My father had been a depressed hoarder my entire life, but I did not realize how bad it was until I started high school. It honestly looked like something out of the TV show “Hoarders” and I got scared and told a teacher. My parents got divorced before the school could intervene and two years later I am fine. Is this something I could/should write for this essay? I don’t know if it’s acceptable or strange. Is it something that a top school would be interested in?

Can someone please help me out?

I don’t really know much about admissions or the like, but I do you understand what you’ve been through. While not exactly the same, my father suffers from bipolar depression, and it can be a difficult challenge at times. Sorry that I couldn’t help you out but I feel like we can relate.

Write about it! Just make sure you write about what you learned or gained from the experience… Maybe an understanding of your father or your family dynamic? An interest in mental health? Something else?
