Chance 2014! First post evar.

Woo I've always wanted to make one of these.

Basics

Race/Ethnicity: Asian

Gender: F

School Type: Public in Texas

GPA: 4.0 Unweighted

Rank: About 16 out of 760 students (top 5% at least)

Tests:

* ACT: 34 Composite
* SAT: 2220 (Retaking soon)
* SAT IIs: World History-730, Math II- 760, Biology- 680 (ouch... I probably won't submit this one)
* AP: US History (5) English Language (5) World History (5) Biology (4)

Taking AP Environmental Science, AP Government, AP Economics, AP English Language, AP Calculus AB and BC this year (in GT if that helps)

Extracurricular:

*AAA Ice Hockey- Since middle school. On only girls team in Texas! We've won a few can/am tourneys. I'm looking to play club in college, not interested in D1 or D3. I spend about 20+ hours a week playing and go to tourneys up in Canada once or twice a month too. It's pretty much my life- I love it!

 • Piano- For over 12 years. I take lessons but it's mostly just for fun. I love it! I don't compete anymore but I do about 3 annual recitals a year locally. About... 7 hours a week?

 • English Honor Society- [10-12], Chairperson, tons of fun, organize community events and stuff, about an hour a week

 • Breakfast Buddies- [9-12], Board Member, mentor children once a week at a poorer elementary school, counts as community service and lots of fun- two for one! (: about an hour a week

 • SAVE- [12] Environmental club, helped to found it (I tried to create it when I first started high school, though I didn't gain approval... Lame. Finally got it thru this year! Though I don't know if I'll be credited as a founder... complicated story), probably have a leadership position

 • Spelling UIL Team- [12] joined this year because my teacher invited me, should be fun but obviously haven't competed yet

 • FM3- [10-12] Math tutor

 • NHS- [11, 12] community service stuff

 • EcoMatters- [summer of 10 for a month] went to New Zealand (family there) and volunteered at this awesome place that emphasized energy efficiency, helped to collect lab samples, taught kids about the environment, went door to door, etc. Pretty much did everything! Awesome experience.

I've done some other things but these are the activities I love the most and spend the most time doing.

Internship:

* LAERF- paid internship at the Aquatic Ecosystems Research Facility run by Army Corps of Engineers over the summer, 32 hours a week, did chemical analysis and other fun research stuff and wrote a paper over it, run by UNT (local university)

 • Advanced Academic Studies- that's the technical name. I'm doing research at an operations research center learning about statistical analysis and other cool things, run by an SMU professor

Recommendations:

* Piano Teacher (who's known me for about 8 years)- Should be phenomenal, I love her!

She's my second mom.

* A letter from either the SMU professor or my boss- should be alright

 • Counselor- Excellente!

 • Two teachers- Should be awesome!

Honors:

LOL... Not too many. ):

* National Merit SemiFinalist

 • Hockey team was champion for a couple tourneys? Though I'm not captain or anything. Does this count? lol

 • My English teacher recognized me and entered me into this national english scholarship/award thing, I don't know if I won or not yet but I know I'm at least recognized. Don't remember the name though... Fail.

Extra:

Took Duke e-Online Course on Advanced Mathematical Studies and Environmental Science- the on-campus course was way too expensive. At the time, I couldn't get financial aid. It was fun, but I don't know if this is worthy of being put on a resume.

Essays:

Should be good. My passion is the environment! I am a total treehugger and vegetarian. I want to be a chemical engineer. (:

Schools in Order:
Brown (ED... long shot, I know but I love this place like no other!)
WUSTL
Rice
UCBerkeley/UCLA/UCSD
UT Honors
Boston U
UBritish Columbia

I know, all over the place. I really want to go to a liberal minded, diverse school that's not too large, and is relaxed and has at least a decent engineering program. (I know the school's above don't all fit the description). So if you have any other recommendations, let me know!

Would you parents spend $50K/yr for a UC over UT honors? Personally, I wouldn’t. You might consider USC and you would have a shot at some aid there–they give lots of merit aid and decent need based.

True I’m applying to UC kind of on a whim because I like certain programs each of them have… Obviously finances are an issue.

Why is that obvious? For many finances are not an issue. If you need financial aid, take the UCs off your list. Every good college list is built with finances as a key consideration.

Your academics/awards are weak. Focus on special positions you held/experiences.

I think you have a decent chance at all your schools. How many female hockey player/enthusiasts are there? You should apply to your chosen schools. All they can do is say “no.”
