heyy
please chance me i’ve realized its august and i have to get on the college grind :frowning:

dems:
-white girl from suburbs in NJ
-parents both college educated
-middle class - prob not applying financial aid since my parents saved for 20 years (US school system at it’s finest amirite)

academics:
-GPA: UW: 3.82 // W: 4.21 (no rank) - mostly A’s, 1 or 2 Bs
-couple APs, couple honors and like 2ish CP classes in my career :stuck_out_tongue:
-SAT: 1170 - ik it’s gross, i took it once and THANK GOD we dont have to submit them
-ACT: 26 - again, i know it’s bad, im not submitting
-APs: APUSH: 5, AP Lang: 4, taking 2 more this year (Italian & Lit)

major: no idea, i’ve been dabbling with comp sci & vet stuff in my extracurriculars (youll see it down below) so maybe one of those idkk

-cheer coach for younger girls, hopefully going to do it again this year
-varsity cheer 4 years (if we have a season this year)
-varsity swim 9-12 (if we have a season this year)
-doing an internship this year at a vet office - if it happens, idk i think its happening
-in a couple clubs since freshmen year, nothing big, just was a member in them
-i was in band for a year, then had to quit because of cheer but i can still play the clarinet if that counts

awards/leadership:
-i won a state history award so that was cool
-future president of a club (this year) got our racist mascot removed this year so that was cool too
–was a representative for an organization for the above club – was a line of communication between the organization and the club, planned community events an whatnot and made the club money for our cause :smiley:
-president of another club (10-12) - raised money for human trafficking victims (it was a human trafficking support club)

-be as nice or as brutal as you want, thanks :smiley: also if u would like to prove my sister wrong - miss “Ur nOt SmArT EnOugH tO gEt InTo thOsE sChOOlS” - that’d be cool

Rutgers is a very good university. Since you are in-state it will be a relative bargain. You should add it to your list.

I think that your chances are very good. It has a very strong animal science program. It is also a very attractive campus and Burlington is a great small city. For us the NPC did correctly predict a merit scholarship, with GPA similar to yours but a very different SAT. Since we are test optional this year for many schools I am not sure whether this will matter or not.

Animals still get sick or have injuries even when there is a pandemic. The people that I know who work in a vet office are just as busy as normal. This spans only two veterinary clinics.

These are significantly different majors and careers.

Computer science is of course an area where there are a lot of jobs. A bachelor’s degree is sufficient to do very well in CS.

Veterinary Medicine is a tough career to get into. We might distinguish between veterinary technicians versus veterinarians.

Veterinary technicians do not make much money – barely enough to live on. You need to avoid debt such as education debt if you are going to be a Vet Tech.

Veterinarians require a bachelor’s degree (4 years) and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (4 more years). Veterinary school is very competitive for admissions, and very expensive. It is very similar to medical school in that regard. However, veterinarians are paid a lot less than doctors. This means that you need to make a huge effort to avoid debt if you want to go to veterinary school (eg, think “in-state” for undergrad – save your college money for veterinary school). Also, you will need a lot of experience in veterinary and animal care situations. Experience dealing with the public is also valuable – every animal comes with its human. Being a veterinarian is not about hugging cute animals. Reaching inside a cow might be a better approximation (and if you have only reached inside a cow three different ways then you are one short of the prevet students I know).

You are not at all boring - your GPA is great, and your ECs are pretty good as well. Since testing seems to be your main weakness, you should definitely take advantage of this year’s test optional status at most colleges.

So, regarding your chances:

Lehigh: low reach. If they weren’t going test optional this coming your, you’d be in trouble, but your GPA is a bit over their average, so, since their acceptance rate is about 30%, that would put it at a low reach/very high match

BU: Similar to Lehigh - low reach
BC: Similar to BU
Villanova: Yet another low reach
Syracuse: probably a safety, a low match at highest
Cornell (legacy): if you apply ED, a lowish reach as a legacy
NYU: Reach and unpredictable
VTech: safety
URochester: somewhere between high match and match
UVM: Safety or low match
Bucknell: Match

You have a good list there, IMO, assuming that these are all colleges which you have looked into and would happily attend if accepted. If you really are not interested in attending Cornell, apply RD.

Of course, every thing that @DadTwoGirls wrote about Vet school is also correct.

Cornell ED might work out for you. Especially this year since they are test optional. The legacy boost is considerable. Also Cornell has a veterinary college in Ithaca.

It’s best to stay closer to home if at all possible. Right now, uncertainty is the new normal. If a parent gets laid-off, has a business failure, etc, your college money supply goes down the toilet right along with it. That scenario is pretty common, even when life was once normal. After the COVID apocalypse, that scenario has accelerated 10,000 times. If that scenario happens to you, you can live at home and take out student loans.
