UNC - no chance
Duke - no chance
Univ. of S. Carolina - in
Clemson - low reach/reach

oh and I live in North Carolina

Duke is out of the question for sure, but USCarolina will take you

Duke and UVa are pratcially impossible reaches. UNC is also highly unlikely. The other schools are matches or slight reaches. Now I see you are projected as a class of 2015, so that would make you a high school Junior. If that’s the case, you have time to imrove your SAT. If you can add 100 or so points in each section of your SAT and improve your unweighed GPA to say 3.4 over the next year, UNC becomes a realstic reach and UVa and Duke, although still big reaches, would be worth a shot.

A lot may depend on your high school’s reputation with admissions officials. Moreover, which part of the state you come from may well be important also. Like other popular public universities, UNC pays attention to concerns from the public about the number of seats provided to the state’s various communities. That’s why the state resident ratio at UNC is quite high, comparer to other flagship public universities [although it’s not as ‘severe’ as it is at U Texas-Austin]. Work closely with your admissions counselor, and yes, work on your marks to do even better.

By the way, don’t be discouraged about Duke either. Duke has had an agreement with the state government for years that commits the school to admit a set number of NC residents to the undergraduate schools.

Well I’m from Charlotte which is in Mecklenburg County. My school is thought to be 2nd as far as academic rigor, we have a ton of students that went to UNC, and a couple that went to Duke

If your high school has sent students with similar records to yours to UNC or Duke and they’ve acquit themselves well in college, you’re in the running. Do your best next year. Wright a great essay, visit the campus for a tour. Make a good impression in any interviews. Good luck.

Also, consider expanding your list of possible choices. Other state universities that may impress you as being similar in culture to UNC and Chapel Hill [but not quite as hard to get admitted to] are…

U of Missouri-Columbia
U of Kansas

And don’t let anyone tell you that those two schools don’t have a fine reputation. A former neighbor of mine is a Kansas grad and has an executive job at the New York City office of a major telecommunications corporation (you’ve heard of it).

Brandon, your test scores and class rank will make admission to Duke highly improbable. An acceptance at Carolina is more likely but still a reach, and I strongly encourage you to apply EA, as you’ll need every bit of boost it will give you. State would be a match.

I’m very familiar with CMS schools, having gone through that system, and your stats are not very impressive even if you attend Myers Park or one of the private schools.

(Good to see you’re still around, LakeWashington!)

OP, Will you need financial aid? While the schools mentioned by Lake Washington would be good matches, you would get no FA at those schools.

Do you plan to play football in college? Are you recruitable?

UVA and Duke are pretty unlikely, but UNC-CH isn’t out of the question.

i will prob apply for fa. and no i dont want to play football in college
