Chance a Burmese-Canadian: Cornell, NYU, Chicago, USC

Hey everyone, thanks in advance for chancing me. Coming from Canada, your advice would really help because I am not very familiar with American admissions.

Although I am Asian (ORM) I think that it may help that both my parents are from Burma (Myanmar). There aren't a lot of Burmese people in North America (compared to other minorities) let alone in universities. I may be leaning towards being an URM...?

My grade 11 average on a 100 point scale (sorry) is around 92
Art (studio and history) - 87
Gr 11 Math - 92
Co-op (2 credits) at an architecture firm - 94
English - 90
Chemistry - 93
Physics - 93
Gr 12 Advanced Functions - 96

Next year I will be taking: English, Art, Calculus, AP Statistics, Physics, and Chemistry

I tried to take AP English and AP Calculus but there is very limited AP class spaces available at my school so by the time I signed up they were both full. If I mention this in my application will it improve my chances? I am not taking the most rigorous curriculum at my school so that makes me nervous.

SAT: 1980; CR: 630, M: 700, W: 650
SAT 2: Math 1: 670
I will be retaking.

Extracurriculars: Piano (gr 9, 10, 11, 12), fundraising for music education organization (gr 9, 10), Environmental TREE Iniative (gr 9, 10, hopefully 12), art gallery volunteer docent (gr, 10, 11, 12)
(After gr 9 and 10, I had to spend more time working to make money for university)

Work experience:
Restaurant dishwasher, summer 2009
Booster Juice, gr 11 during school year
Architecture firm, currently full time during summer

I will be applying to Cornell Architecture, NYU Business, U Chicago (would major in math or economics), USC Business

These are all reach schools but I would like to know if I have any chance at all.

You stand a far better chance at NYU and USC than you do at Cornell and Uchicago. But like you said, they are all reaches with your SAT especially. If you can bring it up 200 points, you’d stand a far better chance. Have you thought about taking the ACT?

Thanks a lot for replying 1finite. I actually haven’t considered writing the ACT; is it much different from the SAT?

The ACT is a little bit easier for me.
But, I think you have a pretty good chance because you are an international student.

I found the ACT easier. I studied a lot for the SAT, took it twice, and got a 2030. I didn’t study at all for the ACT and got a 33 (~2180) my first try

You should definitely mention not being able to take AP Calc in the extra info portion
