I intend to major in public policy or political science (Would love to be an political strategist)

List of colleges:

UVA (dad went there, app would count as in-state)

Dickinson

Franklin and Marshall

McGill

Hamilton

Colgate

Tufts (Mom went there)

Macalester

Tulane

American

Grinnell

Haverford

I also plan on adding a few more matches/safties because I know most of these schools are reaches. If anyone has any other schools that are strong in political science and would be matches/safties please suggest.

Please remember to be as honest as possible, thanks in advance

Sorry that the list is so long.

If you’re looking for a match, St. Mary’s College of Maryland would be a great option for you to consider. As an in-state student, it would be affordable and keep you within 90 minutes of the DC political scene. Also their Center for the Study of Democracy sponsors a lot of public policy events and speakers on campus. http://www.smcm.edu/democracy/events/index.html

thanks radial

try GWU. It’s pricy but for Poly Sci you can’t beat being in DC

improve your SAT to 2000+ and you will have a good shot at all of those LAC’s

I think you’ll definitely get into McGill.

Its a great school in a beautiful city.
Also, I’ve heard that the application process is super easy- I spoke to a student from McGill who actually came from Maryland that said that it was pretty easy for him to get into.

Good Luck!

bellasela: Thanks. Why do you think I would get into McGill so easily?

RDH: I presume that George Washington would be a match?

yes, it most likely would be.

thank you!

bump bump

UVA (dad went there, app would count as in-state) - Because of your two hooks (UVA prefers in-state, correct), I’d say match, about 50-60%.

Dickinson - Low Match 2/3

Franklin and Marshall - Low match

McGill - Match

Hamilton - Higher Match, 40-50%

Colgate - 40%

Tufts (Mom went there) - Nice hook, maybe 40%?

Macalester - 40%.

Tulane - Match 50-60%.

American - Lower match, maybe 2/3.

Grinnell - 45%

Haverford - 35%

Chance back please!

Sorry but I think greg6or was a bit generous. You don’t really have demographics on your side: good colleges don’t exactly have a shortage of upper-class white Jewish boys from the mid-Atlantic, I’m not sure why you billed yourself as diverse. I think you’ll have a relatively better shot at those schools which don’t recruit primarily from the northeast and mid-Atlantic: Tulane, Macalester, and Grinnell.

More than geography or demographics, though, your SAT score is not working for you. It’s well below the median SAT score for most of these schools and in many cases (Tufts, McGill, Hamilton, Haverford) is actually below the 25th percentile for accepted students. If you recall that a lot of students with low SAT scores got in for reasons you can’t duplicate (parents with deep pockets, recruitment for an athletic team, etc.) it pushes the average SATs of students admitted on their own merit yet higher.

Even if you’re a perfectly qualified student in every other way, the reality is that your SAT score might put you into a pile that won’t be investigated as vigorously by admissions counselors. A fairly common admissions practice is to create some sort of loose cut-off, in terms of GPA and SAT/ACT, which leaves a larger number of students than can be admitted still above the cut-off. This “qualified muddle” is then sorted through more carefully to scrutinize personal statements, recommendations, and other personality indicators to craft an incoming class. So before your personality can shine through, you need to actually make it into that qualified muddle.

That’s not to say not to try; obviously some students with SAT scores like yours are let in, I just wouldn’t expect, for example, a 50% chance at getting into Hamilton. Certainly you should try taking the SATs again, but if you can’t get your score up to around 2000, I would highly recommend giving the ACT a try. I know it’s not extremely common in the northeastern urban corridor, but Western, Midwestern, and rural schools take it very seriously. 47% of accepted Grinnell students, for example, submitted the ACT instead of the SAT.
Many students, myself included, perform significantly better on the ACT than the SAT. I scored something like a 1420 on the SAT, which wasn’t stellar for the colleges I was applying to, but a 34 on the ACT, which is pretty stellar. I doubt I would have gotten into as many of my reaches without taking the ACT.

And don’t let me freak you out too much. That actually looks like a good group of schools you put together, and one of my favorite schools, American University (GREAT school), should accept you in a heartbeat, probably with some merit aid. I’m just cautioning that if you have your heart set on getting into Haverford, Hamilton, Colgate, and Tufts (well, I don’t know how your legacy status will help you), you should work to improve your standardized test scores.

Snarf: First thank you so much for your insights. Yes I am well aware that many of schools are mega reaches and know that I have at best a 25% chance to gain admission into some of them. But a chance is a chance and to get into a much better school, I will gladly pay the $75 app fee.

By diverse I meant more in my EC’s. I’m on football and play significently and am the Captian of the Debate Team. Also by being an editor of the paper. At my school that nevers happens.

Thanks again for your realistic insights.

I second AU.
