Chance a Former Slacker, Rising Senior

Hi guys,
I used to be a huge slacker. I didn't do homework , never studied for tests, did nothing after school...It was a disaster. Then about halfway through my sophomore year I realized that what I was doing was gonnna hurt me in the long run. From that point on I never recieved below a B. However, the damage had alraedy done,as my freshman year GPA was pretty low and my sophomore year GPA was just ok. This year I had a huge improvement and really did as well as I know I can.

So heres my stats, and let me know what you think.

Freshman year: 2.78 GPA
Sophomore Year: 3.14 GPA (Honors English)
Junior Year: 3.72 GPA (AP Gov, Honors English, History, Business classes. Awaiting AP exam score for AP Gov)

Cumulative GPA: 3.23

School doesn't weight.

I go to a top 10 school in NJ, and we typically do very well at most colleges (Northern Highlands)

took SAT's Twice:
First time: 610 Math, 620 Reading, 640 Writing 1870 total.
Second time: 610 Math , 620 Reading, 680 writing, 1910 total.
Considering taking a third time come october.

Chance me.

Really interested in something like a business/ film joint program, whether it be Majoring in business in minoring film, or a communications and business double major.

So can I overcome my bad freshman year with my huge upward trend?

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of people who apply from NJ for not very many out-of-state slots, so the competition is much greater than if you were from almost any other state. UMD will be a reach because of your GPA, unfortunately.

The trending upward in grades is MUCH more important than if you went down as you moved through high school … you can do the best you can with your essays and get awesome recommendations.
It’s worth a try, but make sure you have some safety schools that you can be happy with when you apply.

I’m not sure because your an outer-stater…
but those were pretty close to my stats.
I had a personal problem freshman/sophmore year and as a result my time was short and my concentration pretty much non-existent
But junior/senior year I got all A’s and at most one B with AP’s
–actually i think my unweighted gpa was a 3.23

i did have a talent and an explanation for poor grades to back me up

but it sounds like you have a talent to back you up too – meaning film

so I think you have a chance, i wouldnt write off umd yet.

you’ll be straight
had a 2.7 freshman year then had a 3.4 sophomore year and a 3.3 junior year my cum overall was a 3.18 and im out of state… got in for the fall… test scores were decent however 710 math 570 reading 700 writing

Phillies–are you from NJ? That’s the main variable that I’m not sure about.

p.s. I like your name!

our business school is really good. sooo you gotta bust your butt to get into it.
also taking the SAT’s again is definitely a good idea. focus on your reading [or math] since the scores they consider are just your highest for each part.
if you have a good senior year, you have a fair chance.

With the stats you have now, it’s very unlikely that you can get into the business school. [Career Management - Robert H. Smith School of Business - University of Maryland, College Park](http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/career/employers/stats.aspx) Stats are at the bottom, but note that they’re a couple years old, hence they’re probably a little higher now. If you could get your SAT scores up to 1300 (M+CR) then you may have a chance at getting into UMD (not Smith).
