What are the chances that, before graduation, he is offered a job related to his major and/or a job that pays more than $15/hour?

The USC gpa is an overall gpa that includes all classes he took at USC, including GE’s and classes not required for his major (he changed majors in his sophmore year).

Oddball, you might get more responses if you change the title. Most people will look at the thread and think it’s just another HS kid (like me) looking for chances to get in, and probably skip over the thread.

Anyways, I’m just a HS Senior, but according to a family friend who just moved here from California, the job climate is brutal. He went to a UC a few years back and kids that were at the top of his class are struggling to find any work, even for about $15/hour. That’s the only reason he’s over here now anyways, he’s planning on going back once he can find a steady job. I’m assuming your friend wants to stay in California, and I don’t blame him. But maybe, at least until the economy recovers, it might be better for him to move to an area that wasn’t hit nearly as hard? The job market is brutal everywhere, but especially in California.

Good luck to your friend. He sounds like a very bright guy and I’m sure he’ll find a good job somewhere. Just maybe a little farther away than he would like.

not many people on CC are qualified to give a good answer to this.

however, the GPA is pretty decent for an engineering major (although civils tend to have higher gpas than most other engineering disciplines other than perhaps ISE).

honestly if your friend gets a job that’s related to engineering at all your friend will be making much more than $15/hour. has he gone to all the OCR fairs? how does the resume look? has he been to career services and gotten it looked over? has he done interview prep sessions? is he a good interviewer?

the viterbi/usc name will get him in the door (ie the 1st interview) at a lot of places, but it will not get him a 2nd interview or an offer in most instances. interview skills and professional references mean a lot too.

^ Well he was on the Dean’s list for 3 semesters, so I think for those semesters he got above a 3.5. The other thing this means though is that he probably didn’t pull off his 3.4 over the other semesters since his cumulative GPA is a 3.4.
