Chance a girl for Top Ivies??

Hi!

I'm a junior in my second semester and now I've been getting kind of nervous as to my chances with college next year now that acceptance letters for my high school's seniors are all coming out.

I just want to be prepared and have a realistic view and expectations for next so that I'm not going in blind.

Remember that I am only a second semester junior so the GPA is only counting soph year and first semester junior year:

GPA: (10th + 11th) 4.47 weighted.
SAT: 2340 (I only took it once)
PSAT: 230
Ranking: None, my school stopped ranking a couple of years ago when the competition at my school became to intense and students were doing crazy things to edge up their GPAs. I don't know if this helps but I come from a large school (2300+ students) that is extremely competitive.
Race: Chinese
Gender: Female all the wayyy
AP Tests Scores: AP World - 5, AP Chem -5, AP Calc AB -5.
SAT subjects: Math II -750 (but I plan on retaking this year, I took this fresh year) Chem - 800, I plan on taking maybe two more subject tests at the end of my junior year.

AP classes taken/Grades: (we get 6 classes a year) (NOTE: so far I've gotten straight A's in fresh, soph and junior years EXCEPT for one semester of double period AP Chemistry I took last year)
- Soph year:
AP Chem (double period) - A(first sem)/B (second sem),
AP Calc AB A/A,
AP World History A/A
- First semester of Junior year grades:
AP Eng Lang - A,
AP US History -A
AP Computer Science - A
AP Physics B - A
AP Environmental Science - A
Calculus C/D (done through extension through a nearby State university) - A

Extracurriculars
- I started and now run a free after-school music/art program for underprivileged elementary school students. My program utilizes approx 40 high school volunteers from my HS to volunteer providing free music, art, dance and singing lessons (plus free instruments to students in our music program) to inner city elementary school student in our nearby city. We operate at two schools in our city and service approx 80 elementary school students in our city. I raised donations from my community to purchase music instruments and art supplies and recruited volunteers from my high school. We have been featured in several local newspapers and this is probably my most impressive EC and I truly love to do this.
- Internships at a CA assemblyman's office, history museum/committee
- volunteer as a volunteer teacher's assistant at my local community mandarin school (past two years) (4 hours/ week for two years)
- volunteer two weeks out of my summer for past two summers at a children's animal camp. (about 8 hours/day for two weeks each summer)
- volunteer elementary school tutor (one year)
- staff writer for school newspaper (one year, I quit this year though, lol)
- FLUTE PLAYER, I've been in multiple symphonies and orchestras in my city. I am good enough to be considering minoring in flute performance when I go to college. I've been playing only for several years. I've placed 3rd, 2nd (ahh but never 1st, but hopefully i'll land first this year!) in my city's annual flute festival.
- JOB: I am a private flute teacher. People are often surprised to hear this but I am a legitimate private flute teacher with a relatively high fee and I have several students in middle and elementary school.
- hospital volunteer
- there's a couple, not as significant EC's I've done/am doing but above is basically the gist of what I've done.

Also: for this summer I've already landed an internship at my city's mayors office so that's what I plan on doing. I also most likely plan on getting another job like waitressing or something to get some money to save up for a really epic laptop.

In total I'd prob guess I have over 500 hours of vol service, but colleges don't really care in the cumulative number of hours right? They more care about the weekly num of hours and the content of the activity. Is that right?

I don't know if this applies but I am extremely driven and sociable too. I can hold a decent conversation with my teachers on politics and world affairs and most of my teachers, I think, are pretty impressed with me. Thus, I think I'd get pretty awesome letters of rec.

Please give me my chances for applying (next year when I'm a senior) to the top Ivies including:

Princeton
Harvard
Yale
UPenn
Duke
Dartmouth
Stanford (esp Stanford, its on the west coast and I would love to stay on the west coast)
U Chicago
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UCSD
and any other colleges you guys might think is the best fit for me.

Also, remember that I'm a junior, not a senior, so I plan on probably adding on a few more extracurriculars that I'm really interested in by the time I apply next year.

Also, I plan on majoring in possibly the Humanities such as Enlgish or History or Political Science. I may also consider Business as a major. I'm not totally sure yet but I'm pretty sure that I am NOT going to major in the sciences or math including Medicine or Chemistry or and of that stuff. I am also seriously considering minoring in Flute Performance but I've still got to think on it a little more.

Thanks in advance you guys!!

This is creepy because you go to my school and I know exactly who you are…anyway, I’m a senior and I’ll try and help you out…

Grades and scores are great (although they do include freshman year, with some notable exceptions like Princeton). ECs are pretty good…although to be honest I’m not sure what symphonies you’re talking about because I don’t recall you being in SDYS or CYO or YAS :P

Just thinking ahead, you should probably write an essay about your art program EC, make sure you demonstrate passion for it, otherwise it just seems like another random club somebody started for the sake of having a leadership position. And I know that’s not the case with yours.

UCs - I’d be surprised if you didn’t get in, probably with Regents.
Duke, Dartmouth, Chicago, Penn - Match?
HYPS - Reach for everyone, but you’ve got a good shot?

Cool thanks for the post. It wasn’t too creepy. About symphonies, up until 8th grade I was in SDYS and then up until the beginning of junior year I was in CYO. Lol I was also in YAS for a week but then my mom refused to drive me to any more symphonies so I quit.

You got a problem here. You say you do NOT want to major in math or science yet all the tests you’ve taken just scream science/math. Your scores and your majors do not match.

All the Ivy schools + Stanford will likely be high reaches. Duke, Chicago, maybe. Chicago likes those incredible test takers.

UCs I know nothing about.

Thanks for the response and I totally agree. I do think all of the courses and subject tests I’ve taken do shout math/science oriented student. I hope to change that through the courses I’ve chosen for my senior year and through the SAT subjects I’ll take this year.

do you have any awards outside of flute competitions?

I think you should get into the UC’s, Duke, and UChicago. Penn is also just about a match. HYPS really is as reach for everyone but your resume is very impressive, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into at least one of them.
