Chance a Journalism/Poli Sci major?

<p>Helloooo</p>

<p>So, I feel like I put myself in a bad position gpa wise, but I'm half convinced that everything else I've done will get me in... Help?</p>

<p>Colleges:
- USC (Journalism, alt. is poli sci)
- Emerson <a href="Journalism%20or%20Writing%20for%20Film%20and%20Television">#1</a>
- NYU (Journalism or political science)
- Boston University (Journalism)
- UCSB (tag)
- Cal (Media Studies)
- UCLA (Poli sci, alt is Comm)
- UCI (Poli Sci, alt is Drama)</p>

<p>From: California community college (De Anza)
Major: Journalism, Political Science, or something like creative writing.
College GPA: 3.4, 3.8 or 3.9 in major related classes, 3.29 UC GPA [if that matters]
HS GPA: 3.5
SATs: 1550, debating to take it again because the other schools I've applied to don't require it at all...</p>

<p>EC's
- 50+ hours volunteering at library, mainly taking care of the kids in the community portion of the library for 2 hours a week.
- 1 yr of being opinion editor and columnist of HS newspaper (20 hr/w), writing and designing every week as well as teaching new journalism students how to write in different styles.
- Link Crew leader (1 yr), helping high school freshmen get around school. Some leadership stuff.
- 1 yr of being staff writer, opinion editor, news editor, designer, and web editor (at separate times) at award winning college newspaper (30 hr/w). The newspaper I worked for has won dozens of awards. I spent a huge amount of my 1st college year working and writing for them. Edited stories, became well versed in AP-style editing...
- 1 yr being a junior senator in student government at community college student senate (5 hr/w). Helping out student government on a volunteer basis. Primarily assisting Marketing Committee in student outreach and event planning.
- 1 yr (in spring) of being Chair of Marketing and senator in student senate (15 hr/w). I honestly don't know how many hours a week this is. Being a senator entails that you have voting power in a 30-person student senate. Help allocate $1.3mil budget. Chair of Marketing, overseeing Marketing projects and marketing budget.
- graphic designer for start-up company's website. Not much here.</p>

<p>My essays are pretty good and my recommendation will be pretty good as well. I'll also be sending in physical portfolios of my work (HUGE ones) including article writing (news, features, entertainment, column, op/ed), page design (for print), graphic design, and photography.</p>

<p>I mainly emphasize on Journalism (or any creative writing) and political science. I can go into this further if any of you want me to...</p>

<p>Thanks :) I'll try to chance back!</p>

<p>bump anyone?</p>

<p>My first question is can you afford the privates? There are schools where you’d get little or no aid.</p>

<p>Your GPA is weak, I’m not seeing USC or UCLA. If you work is strong, while the rest are reaches, you might have a shot.</p>

<p>Well, Waverly is right that a 3.4, especially at a community college, does not look good…I’m assuming you’re a junior transfer? However, it’s not impossible, and I really like your ECs. Don’t get too set on any one school, but I’d be surprised if you didn’t get into at least a couple on your list.</p>

<p>Bump, anyone? Specifically for Emerson!</p>
