From this very basic preliminary info, do I have a chance at being accepted into Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, UCLA, Berkley, Duke etc, assuming that my essays will be above average?

Practice SAT tests indicate >2200
SAT Subject Tests: Planning to take Maths I and Chemistry

GPA: ???
Other: Top awards in Art History, English, History at school

Taking scholarship English, Art History, History and Economics

Asian, F

Major: Most likely Political Science

EC's:

Top 6 rank in u17's age group in Oceania
Top 4 in u17's age group in NZ
NZ 'B' team

School badminton captain- (Organise 200+ students)

Flute, guitar (as hobbies)

Volunteering:

I know I don't have a lot of EC's or Volunteering experience but I was wondering how much 'weight', my badminton achievements will add to my application? Badminton's on the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women list but I know that badminton is not very popular in the States

I'm assuming you are applying for 2010 entry.

Advice: Don't take SAT1 maths if you have done NCEA calculus (level 3 is fine, no need for scholarship). Take SAT2 maths, you have chance of getting higher score. 1% of SAT1 maths takes get 800, while 10% of SAT2 maths get 800. It's good that you did not choose Eng Lit. Chemistry is easy.

If you get 2200 in SAT and 700+ on the subject tests, here are your chances:

Yale - Reach - 3% chance - typical international candidate
Princeton - Reach - 3% chance - as above
Columbia - High Match - 30%
Stanford - Reach - 10%
UCLA - Low Match - 50%
Berkley - Match - 40%
Duke - Low Reach - 20%

Your badminton will definitely help.

Good luck, PM me for any questions on anything, I am also a kiwi applying to similar caliber universities as you, but for 2009 entry.

Hey, I’m also from NZ, applying 2009 entry, feel free to ask any questions as well. I think Elvito is about right in his chancing (I might put your chances a bit higher) and I would recommend focusing on the things that really make you stand out like the badminton - that’s what the Ivies look for. Anything else I can help with feel free to PM me.
