Chance a OOS(CA) CC transfer student for UT-Austin Petroleum Engineering

I am applying for the fall 2014 admission (PETROLEUM ENGINEERING) from a California CC. I will maintain my 4.0 and will have completed all the required CBK courses: Math, Physics, Chemistry, etc. If it matters I am taking 25 units in spring and some include the required courses. There are other semesters I took over 18 and 12 in the summer etc. I took about 12 units worth of Honors courses in the General Ed category. I have outstanding ECs related to my major and included excellent recommendation letters even though they are not required. I have extensive engineering experience on vehicles. On top of that, I have had years of experience installing and distilling bio-diesel fuel. The only recommended courses I may be missing is a geology lab and technical writing. Even though my counselors say I have a very good chance of getting in I am skeptical because their focus is mainly on California colleges. What else do admissions look for in transfer students? The only thing that could possible hold me back (it may even improve my application) is that my highschool gpa was about a 2.2 something (VERY LOW). It was because I inputted all my time and energy into auto mechanics. Perhaps they will see the turn around I made at CC with the 4.0 and it wont even matter. Thank you in advance.

Unless you apply as a freshman, I don’t think they take your high school transcript into consideration at all. Hope this help.

Thank you

Hi RedEye. I study PetE at UT so hopefully I can help you a bit. The GPA looks good. Our department advisor mentioned to me that admission to PGE has become so competitive that they can only afford to admit 4.0’s (or very close to that) now for external transfer admissions. As far as your high school GPA… that might help in your favor. UT likes to see self-improvement and a change in your attitudfe & work ethic. I was the same way! I failed and slacked in high school then went to a community college and did like you’re doing. Let me know if you have any questions about the classes or anything. Hope you get in.

WC

Also the above is right - your HS transcript is not considered at all in admissions.

@WCvolvo I was admitted this coming Fall 2014.! Just went to orientation this past week and immediately fell in love.

Very nice, congratulations! What are you taking? I’m in Chemistry 2, Geology, Transport, and Communications. Perhaps we will have class together :]

I am taking engineering communications, Phys & chem behavior of fluids, form& sol of geo sys engr, statics, and I might add one more if I dont end up working.

Congrats
It’s nice to see someone that was able to transfer into something as competitive as UT petroleum!

I’m the opposite of you: I had my heart set on petroleum, was denied, and am now going to be happily chasing my dreams in the automotive industry (starting with a dual major in mechanical and chemical engineering most likely).
