Chance a transfer student for Texas Tech, University of Houston, and University of Texas at Dallas

Hi everyone.

Right now, my college years has been well... rough (I've been in college for over two years). I have a really good GPA in regards to liberal arts, but my math/science GPA is pretty bad... currently my overall GPA is at 3.3. Right now, I'm doing courses online for the summer and also plan on attending college in the fall (if I have money) and graduate with an Associates (I'm taking all my basics there). I'm planning on majoring in History with a minor in Japanese and Asian Studies (because I do want to teach in Japan, I don't recall any ESL positions requiring an English major). I also have 120 hours of community service... and not really much else. I have a 3.61 in high school, but I think my college GPA is more important.

I'm sure there are things I can still do to improve my résume, though.
- I haven't taken the SAT or ACT
- There's always more time for community service
- There's still the fall semester and if I get all As, I should be somewhere between 3.5-3.55 GPA by the end of the fall semester. I intend to transfer in Summer, 2015 (since I doubt colleges will be looking at my Fall, 2014 scores for a Spring, 2015 transfer).

I think I'll get into Texas Tech, but I'm not sure about University of Houston and doubtful of my odds of getting into University of Texas at Dallas. I'm not planning on applying to UT Austin since I have no shot there and am using UT of Dallas as my "reach" school. Still, I'd like to see what others think, what else I need to mention, and what else I can do to improve my résume.

Honestly, I think you’ll be fine for U of H, especially if you get up to a 3.5. They don’t offer a minor in Japanese, but they do offer one in Asian American Studies.

Good luck. :)

Well they do have Japanese classes that you can take, although yes, I did forget that they didn’t offer a minor there. But yeah, I can attend those classes anyway in an Asian American Studies. However, they do have a big Chinese Studies program, goes up to even a Master.

Something I just noticed here:

http://www.utdallas.edu/enroll/apply/tappprocess.php

Apparently, if you have 42+ hours, as long as you have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and is in good standing with your school, you’re “assured admission”.

I find this weird. According to College Confidential, the average amount that gets people accepted into UT Dallas according to high school GPA is a 3.59 yet somehow, a 2.5 GPA and good standings with the school is good enough to get in. Is there some catch here that I’m forgetting because there’s no way I would have imagined UT Dallas to be so easy to transfer to.
