Chance a transfer student?

I'm an incoming college freshman who is planning on transferring from my current institution after my first year. However I have a low gpa(2.5) from high school and a low ACT score(19) due to a learning disability in mathematics but other then that my record is pretty good, especially in terms of extracurriculars.

Although in terms of my college record which my major is history and political science, everything has been fairly good. I had a GPA at midterms of (3.4) and along with that fairly good grades in all my classes, I have also been told that I am performing above average compared to many fist-year college students. I have also further expanded my extracurricular record, especially in terms of participation in honor's societies, which were mostly off limits to me in high school due to my GPA. With this I have been fairly active in Phi Alpha Theta(History Honors Society) and Sigma Tau Delta(English Honors Society). I have also contributed to a few political activities and community service activities both over the summer entering college and at college. Also things should be even better for me GPA wise next semester since I won't be in many hard introductory classes. Even though my math course level is below average compared to many college students or what they expect at some of the schools I'm applying to.

So if I keep things up and perhaps bring my GPA up even more. As well as continuing to add to my record.

What are my chances at the following schools as college transfer student.

Gettysburg College(Waitlisted in when I applied my senior year of high school)

Allegheny College( Waitlisted in when I applied my senior year of high school)

Dickinson College

Franklin & Marshall College

George Mason University

Mary Washington University

Virgina Military Institute

The Citadel

Wake Forest University

George Washington University

So is there any opinion on where I stand?

Unfortunately, your mid-term performance has no way of making a difference in this case unless they ask for a Mid-term report. (Your transcripts are blank).

You COULD give it a shot, however, if you work and do well, you’ll have a college GPA and can apply for Fall 2010 with better chances.

I was planning on waiting at least a year to transfer as I feel things will be much more to my advantage.

Well, in that case, you’ll have your first semester grades to be considered on the transfer, however, your HS performance will still have the dominant weight. It’s certainly worth a shot for Fall, and if not, Spring '11 definitely looks good if you keep your performance up.

Also wouldn’t my second semester grades be considered also since most of the colleges on the list have much later dates for applying for admission for transfers then they did for first year students? In addition those that don’t have later dates for transfer students usually don’t send out acceptances or denials until towards the end of the school year?

So shouldn’t I have a pretty good chance for acceptance at many of these schools? Especially since in the case of some of them I’ve been told by admissions staff that my colleges grades carry the greatest weight especially after a year of college and to add to that a few of them don’t really consider SAT/ACT scores after a transfer student has completed a year of college.

Depends. Only if the deadline is after the year is over and you can send those transcripts. But yes, if you CAN in fact get 2 semesters in, then that definitely will factor in more heavily, which I why I originally said Spring '11.

If you keep doing well, and apply at a time where you have 2 semesters done, you should have a good shot at your targets.

Most of them have notifications after the 1st of May couldn’t I just send them a mid-term report?

Because it doesn’t make alot of sense to me to count only the first semester of a college transfer and not the second.

You could, but mid-term reports do not hold the same weight. Remember, that does not factor in how you will perform on your final exam.

What they count has all to do with what you have when you apply. First semester transfers are based solely on HS performance (as they have no official transcripts), and if a mid term report is sent, it’s lightly factored. Where it can matter is if you get accepted and bomb that semester.
