Chance an Anglo Saxon Hero for Ivies/Tier 1 Schools

Okay, deep breath here we go!
Half Caucasian Half Chinese Senior Male born in London and lived in South Korea (good essay material) but still a US citizen

Do not be too daunted by the post length, I spaced a lot for easy reading. The myriad of schools I am apply to are as follows: Brown, Dartmouth (legacy), Duke (legacy), UPenn, McCombs Honors, UT (safety), Wash U St. Lou, Northwestern, Stanford (early action yeah it's a stretch), Swarthmore, Williams (maybe not - too sure on this one), JHU, RICE, and Amherst. Oh also UVA and Georgetown

Do not feel the need to chance me on all the thousands of schools I'm applying. Feel free to just chance me on the ones that you're familiar with. Thanks!! I will chance back

Class Rank: 20/670 so top 3% at an academically competitive high school
Weighted GPA is 101.45 not too sure what my unweighted is at this time.
SAT I (1st time): CR: 800 Math: 660 Writing: 670 Total: 2130 w/out Writing: 1460
SAT I (2nd time): CR: 800 Math: 750 Writing 700 (I too was astonished that I got 800 CR twice) Total: 2250 W/out Writing: 1550 (1550 looks much better than 2250)
SAT IIs: US History: 800 Math II: 780
APs
AP World History:5
AP English Language:5
AP Physics B: 4
AP US History:5
I'm taking nine, yes nine, AP tests this coming May and plan (of course) to get 5s on all of them. They are as follows: European History, English Literature, Spanish language, Human Geography, US Government, Macroecon, Calculus AB, Environmental Science, Psychology.

I am taking all APs my senior year and have had a rigorous course schedule since freshman year - all the hardest classes possible. (All honors and AP when available)

I am a National Merit Commended Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction.

Major ECs: (I'll try to make it somewhat short)
Four years of long distance track and cross country - team captain Senior year. From sophomore year and up I've consistently run varsity. I do not plan to run in college but my PR for the mile is a 4:42 and I was the alternate runner at a big state's largest school division state meet where my team placed 6th.

Three years of Varsity Chorale (Mixed Choir) and Baritone section leader my Junior year. I could not take the class Senior year due to a full schedule.

Over 100 hours of Community Service

Plenty of the usual clubs and positions such as National Honor Society Senator, NSHS, VP of International Film Club, VP of Management Club

Team Captain of the school's Academic UIL Social Studies Team last year and this year. We placed 4th in the state in the largest school division and 1st in our region last year.

I slayed Grendel.

Can't read my recs but I'm sure they're good. I have some very talented teachers.

Essay: Everyone thinks that their own essays are exceptional, but I'm well aware that at this level of competition exceptional is all relative. Hopefully mine are exceptional. ;)

In short, (I know this wasn't short thanks for reading it.) hopefully the fact that I'm only half Asian softens the pain that most Asians experience when they apply to college. Also, the fact that I'm not your generic Asian that is good at math and science should set me apart. On the contrary, I'm the complete opposite (History and English guy) and have also tried to excel in athletics as well and not just do robotics club. Choir should also set me apart somewhat as it's usually a taboo for guys to do and I'm not half bad at it.

Thank you so so so so so much in advance. I will chance back.

Let me know if I left anything vital out. I tried to be laconic. SAT VOCAB Yeaaah!!! :D

Bump!!! Any opinions would be greatly appreciated

You slayed Grendel ; you’re golden anywhere ^^

You got an 800 on your CR twice and don’t know that the past tense of slay is “slew?”

yeah… about that lol. Well you can still hypothetically miss two questions on the CR sections and still get an 800 (I did that my first 800) so… perhaps the verb tense of “slay” was one of the two? although, I’m still embarrassed.
Despite the grammar error!! Wait!!! That’s writing is it not? Which I clearly got a 700 on.
Anyways, chance me?

Your resume looks good but since they are all top-tier schools, it’s a lottery which one gives you a spot. The legancy thing should help though. UVA is your safe school, I’m guessing?

yeah UVA is my semi-safe school. My absolute is UT Austin where I have auto admittance.

Bump!

High match at Northwestern/WashU/Dartmouth in at UT and UVA. UPenn is a big reach.

I think you’re going to get into a lot of good schools. If you get into Brown, you should go.

Everything looks good for you, but Ivies are always a toss up. You should get into at least a few in my mind, and nice job getting 800 cr twice, I could only dream of that… anyways, good luck!

thanks for the predictions!! Although as of yet, no one has chanced me on some of the liberal arts schools i’m considering, anyone have any idea on those? Although all chances are still appreciated~!

Brown: Match only if you take a good Photo for the app
Penn: High Match if ED, Reach if RD
Dartmouth and Duke: in, have your parents call up the adcom 24/7
LAC:… why are you even looking these? in at all of them
hope that helps.

from my knowledge of UVA admissions I wouldn’t say your safe but I’d say you have a good shot. Same with Hopkins, Rice, NW, Duke, and Gtown. Good luck to you.

We are looking at some similar schools! And we have similar interests  Honestly, you have a good chance. I most certain about Duke, although Dartmouth looks promising too. Chance me also? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/802020-texas-has-bison-but-vermont-has-ski-slopes-where-shall-i-end-up.html</a></p>

Good luck, and may the best man win for UT, Rice, and Georgetown!

Sranford EA? i heard Stanford was kind of notorious for their EA acceptance rate. but since you’re just so good, just hope for the best and, good luck

well thx for the chance, you look like you have a good chance at most of those, stanford is a reach for everyone, and UPenn is also tough, but 2250 is pro, and you seem to have good stats for the places like NWestern, JHU WUSTL and Duke, out of the 16 you listed, youre guaranteed 10 and more likely accepted into 12 of those

I’m glad you’re not in my graduating class…XD. You’ll do fine imo, best of luck!

Your rank is solid, your AP count is bold, your ECs are lackluster but solid, and you have slain the Grendel (not to mention his hag of a mom).

It’d help to know your unweighted GPA (it’s highly influencial in admissions), but I’m sure that it’s acceptable given your rank.

Being an unhooked candidate with nothing to significantly differentiate yourself, I can’t say you have great chances at the top schools. But nothing glares as lacking, so acceptance at one or more top schools is perfectly plausible (so too, however, is the alternative).

If you can write about your time outside the United States in a compelling way, you increase your chances quite a bit, as you would probably be a border-line candidate at many top schools.

you’re pretty much amazing, but ivy leagues are always toss-ups. i think you have a good shot, though. good luck!

chance back?=]
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/814456-chances-ill-reciprocate.html</a></p>

I’d size up the odds something like this:

high reach
Stanford
reach
Brown,Swarthmore, Williams, Amherst
low reach
Dartmouth (legacy), Northwestern,Georgetown, UPenn
low reach / high match (depending on essays, LORs)
WUSTL, RICE, UVA, Duke (legacy), Middlebury and Cornell (listed elsewhere)
Safety
UT

Qualifications are excellent. Legacy at Dartmouth and Duke should help. The only thing missing for the reachier schools is truly exceptional/remarkable ECs. Stanford etc. get kids who have acted on Broadway, published novels, won major science prizes (Intel, Westinghouse). That does not mean they do not accept merely superb students. It means there seems to be an element of luck based on what kind of year it is, how many other people apply who fit your profile, etc.

After Middlebury announced decisions in April, they posted the number of perfect 800s and team captaincies among accepted students. So you have those 2 things going for you at that school.

Where this list is a little weak is in the match/likely category (especially if money might be an issue and need-based aid is unlikely). Consider adding a couple of good schools that are slightly less selective and that grant merit aid. Grinnell, Macalester College or Whitman for example (among LACs). Pick one for fit.

The other weakness in the list is a certain lack of focus. What do all these schools have in common other than prestige and selectivity? There is no law saying you have to attend the highest-ranked school that accepts you. What will make you happier in April, saying you’re going to the school that some magazine ranked 3rd highest on your application list (because you did not get in to 1 and 2), or that you’re going to an excellent school that really fits your needs, maybe one that tosses in a $10K grant? (there is no right answer – some kids truly don’t care about “fit” issues).
