Beowulf wasn’t an Anglo-Saxon.

I did not mean Anglo-Saxon hero as in that was his ethnicity. Rather, I meant that those people considered him a hero. To the Angles and the Saxons, Beowulf was a hero. But yeah, you are right in that he was a Geat.

GREAT CHANCE AT ALL! Wow…just wow…

I don’t know your chances but you amuse me deeply.
After all, you are Beowolf :)!
Anyway, seriously, I think you might get into 2 of the 7 ivies- lower ones
fit for middlebury and UVa
as for stanford and rice, reach - you don’t seem to be a math person.

Okay, the Common App deadlines are fast approaching and I’m in need of a revival for this thread.
UPDATES: Rejected from Stanford (PM if you want to read my essays) and Oxford. - Oxford I never listed on this because I doubted that anyone would know anything about it. I made it to the finalist interview stage and flew all the way up to England for it. Alas, they did not think I was right for the tutorial program. (Nevertheless, it was a great experience and resulted in some sweet facebook friends.)
No longer applying to RICE, Georgetown, and UVA.
Will apply to Williams, Middlebury, and Cornell

Obviously I’m 0 for 2 right now and my self confidence is kind of shot. Although, I comfort myself by remembering that the schools that rejected me were Stanford and Oxford. (I really thought I had a good shot at Oxford ]:

All chances are greatly appreciated at this time of extreme anxiety.
I will chance back!

LACs- they are all top schools, so reaches like the ivies~ I don’t think I need to tell you about the rest, I would say above posters have been accurate. Since you’re into English/History, I imagine your writing skills can pull you through on a lot of these schools.

EDIT- Ahh, sorry to hear about Stanford and Oxford. I know how it feels… my first letter was a rejection (from Columbia ED), and it really shot my confidence. But when my acceptance came from my safety (Rutgers) it made me feel A LOT better- at least I’m going somewhere! But yeah, they are VERY selective- with your stats, you will get in SOMEWHERE you want to go, don’t worry about it.
Good luck!

Thanks for the chance.

First off, you have amazing stats–and that’s an understatement. There’s the 800 in CR not once, but twice, that I know I would have killed for on my SAT II lit, ridiculous ECs, and a beast average. That alone makes you practically an automatic “in” at most non-Ivy-league caliber schools. Your willingness to challenge yourself with 9 AP courses speaks to the expectations you hold for yourself.

A few questions, though:
a.) Georgetown requires 3 SAT IIs, what’s the 3rd one you took (or plan on taking) and what’s your score (or projected)?
b.) Are you sure you don’t want to run? (doing sports + solid academics = better chances @ being a Rhodes scholar, in case you were thinking of that)
c.) What on earth does a NHS Senator do?? (just curious, really)

I will proceed on the assumption that your essays are brilliant.

Now, out of a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest):

Brown: 6
Dartmouth (legacy): 7
Duke (legacy): 8
UPenn: 7
Wash University at St. Louis: 10
Northwestern: 10
Stanford EA: 5
Swarthmore: 7
Williams: 7
JHU:6.5
RICE: 8 (is there any reason why this is in caps?)
Amherst: 6.5 (just because it’s kinda hard to get in)
UVA: 7
Georgetown: 7

No reason that Rice is in caps. Just felt like it I guess haha. However, I posted an update 2 posts back. I’m not longer applying to Georgetown, RICE!! :), or UVA but have added Middlebury and Cornell to the list.

I may consider running at a D3 school or at one of the LACs. My problem with it is though, is that it’s so darn stressful. If I could, I would prefer to just focus on academics. Don’t get me wrong, I love running just racing is the really stressful part.

NHS Senator - I’m pretty sure is my school specific. It’s basically a pseudo-officer position that the NHS sponsor at my school selects from failed office candidates. I ran for secretary under the slogan: “guys can be secretaries too!” with a picture of Thomas Jefferson on the poster. That didn’t fly too well apparently haha. We basically attend the officer meetings and give our input but don’t have any specific roles like the historians, secretaries, treasurers etc. do

Thanks for the chances! And yeah, Amherst is dreadfully competitive. The supplement essay is a son of a ***** as well lol.

Shameless Bump!!! Note my update post four posts back

Chance me as well!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/838257-might-well-add-my-thread.html

Hey, you’re just like me! Half-asian half- european! Hm, you’re stats are pretty similar to mine too, lol.

Brown: Match

Northwestern: Match
Stanford EA: Reach

Stats are amazing blah blah blah you know. nothing new =P

UPenn - low reach
UT (safety) - in
Wash U St. Louis - match
Northwestern - high match
Stanford (early action yeah it’s a stretch) - reach
Swarthmore - high match
Williams (maybe not - too sure on this one) - match
JHU - high match
RICE - match
Amherst - high match
UVA - in
Georgetown - high match

Of course this depends on your essay/majors/etc. Good luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/835494-please-chance-me-cornell-ill-return-favor.html

P.S. - some of those low reaches may be high matches depending on how schools value your slaying Grendel

i’m really surprised that you got rejected straight away from stanford, do people not get deferred there?
Here are my chances:
Brown: reach
Dartmouth (legacy): low reach
Duke (legacy): high match
UPenn: reach
Wash University at St. Louis: dunno
Northwestern: match
Swarthmore: low reach
Williams: low reach

Apparently people do. A minority girl at my school got deferred but the valedictorian got straight up rejected like me o:

College Admissions are wild…

dude you will get into one of those schools.

update: Got into McCombs Business Honors Program today!!!
(very excited):D:D:D

Okay, important question: Do you have one of those hot British accents? :P

Anyways. Because you’re part Asian, you automatically have a disadvantage. The rigorous classload is GREAT though, that’ll help you a lot, and your SAT score is also pretty good. Dartmouth and Duke, you’ll probably get in to because of the legacy thing, Brown… meh, 30% chance. And I think you’ll get into at least either JHU or Rice, if not both. GL!

Haha no I don’t. I did until I was in kindergarten and moved to New York though!!! (If that counts? lol)

Thanks for the chance, and I’ll take any luck I can get.

Are you attending UT?

Beowulf! Nice screen name =)

You sound pretty amazing. I think you have a great chance at all the schools and I basically agree with cookiemonster, with a few differences-

Brown - match
Dartmouth (legacy) - match (your credentials and your legacy will help)
Duke (legacy) - high match (your credentials and your legacy will help)
UPenn - low reach
UT (safety) - in
Wash U St. Louis - match
Northwestern - high match
Stanford (early action yeah it’s a stretch) - match (with EA)
Swarthmore - high match
Williams (maybe not - too sure on this one) - match
JHU - high match
RICE - match
Amherst - high match
UVA - in
Georgetown - high match

You have a really interesting portfolio going on there, Beowulf. Here are my thoughts on your chances:

GOOD CHANCE: Dartmouth (you have legacy), Duke (you have legacy), Northwestern, Georgetown, Rice, UVA, Middlebury

OKAY CHANCE: Swarthmore, Brown, Amherst, Washington University in St. Louis, Cornell, Williams

NEED SOME LUCK: Stanford, University of Pennsylvania

Not sure about UT. Are you Out of State, and how do they look at out of staters?

Update: Waitlisted at Washington University in St. Louis.

REALLY SCARED NOW…
