Hey everyone! After receiving my ACT scores this weekend, I am extra discouraged and lost a lot of confidence.

I am applying to Villanova RD (I should have applied EA). It is my dream school, but now I don't think I even have a chance...

Anyways, here are my stats:

Personal:
-Hispanic
-Male
-First-Generation

Academics:
-GPA: 3.45 UW
~Freshman: 3.29 UW (No Honors; No APs)
~Sophomore: 3.57 UW (No Honors; No APs)
~Junior: 3.49 UW (2 Honors Classes; No APs)
~Senior: N/A (No Honors; 4 APs)

-Rank: 127/460 (I know, it's pretty bad, but my senior class is very smart)

*I put on the brag sheet for my GC that during freshman year I had personal problems that distracted from academics, but I don't know if she mentioned that

Standardized Tests:
-ACT: 27 (I know it's bad, and I can't take it again )

-SAT II:
~Math II (around 690-720)

Work
-Office Assistant @ a Hispanic Financial Service Group(11th and 12th Grade; 16 Hrs/Wk)

Extra-Curriculars
-120 Hrs @ Habitat for Humanity (9th to 12th)
-Varsity Soccer (10th to 12th) --> Captain Senior Year
-Co-Treasurer of Environmental Club (11th to 12th)
-Freshman Soccer (9th) --> Captain
-Freshman Basketball (9th)
-Technology Students Association (12th)

Your assessment is probably correct , it would appear to be a reach.
82% of 2010 admits had higher gpa , your act is below 25th percentile.
Extra Curriculars are average to below average for Villanova , although soccer captain is a plus.
Weak Honors/AP prior to Senior year also a negative.

Essays , teacher recommendations will have to be excellent.

Engineering is competitive application wise and very demanding once you are here.

As for URM boost , it is a factor , but not as big as you would think. Villanova has attracted an increase in Hispanic applicants and enrollment , Hispanics students represent approximately 7% of the student body.

^^^ I know… it’s not looking so well for me :(

I’m an international student from Taiwan who is applying to Villanova University this year. (Major: Computer Engineering)

my UW 3.58, Weighted GPA is 3.78.
SAT: CR 550, M 710, W 660, and I am still waiting for the dec SAT score.

I have an upward trend in terms of GPA starting from 9th grade. I’m currently taking 4 AP classes. ( two honors and one AP in 11th grade)

I’ve 4 years of computer engineering internship in a leading manufacturer in terms of disposable laparoscopic products that engineers hardware and software for hospitals.
I also have 4+ years of internship in a clinic ( with an ENT doctor and a dentist).
I am the two leaders of my school clubs, one starting from 9th grade, and the other started from this year.
I am also a butterfly and freestyle stroke swimmer in our school ( Division II varsity swimming team)

Based on the information above, what do you think the chance for me to get in? I will provide more information if you need to estimate my chance. I personally think that it might be a big hard to get in? And i guess that my ethnicity might lower my chance as well?

by the way, I am currently studying in Villanova Preparatory School, I don’t know if that helps…

Thanks

Dre,

I think Ulysses is right. Hispanic students college attendance rates are increasing very very fast … I’m not saying they will some day be “non-minorities” in the eyes of admissions, like Asian kids now are, bt certainly there are a lot of Hispanics filling the college ranks. Now if you were African-American or Native American, the world is still your oyster at the top universities (assuming essentially equivalent academics, ECs, etc etc).

Best of luck and know this: No matter WHERE you end up going, in the end it will become home and it will be the right place and the place where you start uour adult life andmake lifetime friends, and it will be YOURS forever. The college name on a letterhead is secondary.

Peace.
