Chance as a transfer from top 20?

I have posted a similar one before (1 month ago?) and now I know my college GPA so I need further advice. I'm currently a freshmen whose major is applied math & statistics, with a second major in econ.

Transfer list:

Stanford
UPenn (CAS)
UChicago
Northwestern
JHU
Brown
Cornell
Columbia

Current University: Vanderbilt University
Current courses:Cal 3, intermediate microecon, Java, Composition
Current GPA: 4.0 out of 4.0
Next semester: C++, Statistics, Existential Fictions, Linear Algebra, Intermediate Macro (all sophomore standing)
Rec: one from math professor and one from econ professor. Both are really good--I am the best student in their classes.

High School (international):
GPA: 3.8
HS Rank: 15/570
SAT: 2230
SAT 2: Math level 2: 800, Chemistry: 780, Physics: 780
AP(all 5): US history, Micro, Macro, Cal BC, Chemistry.

EC's:
Research assistant at Vanderbilt Medical Center, statistics work
Vanderbilt Mobile Applications Team
Vanderbilt Computer Science Club
Vanderbilt Math Club
Vanderbilt Student Volunteer for Science
Internship at a consulting company, statistics and analysis
President & Co-founder of a Volunteer Society, interviewed by national TV
Captain of secondary school debate team
Journalist at a News Agency, several articles on national newspaper
Public Sector at an NGO

Awards, Achievement, and Recognition:
ACM-ICPC regional final
Best representative in MUN
Best debater in regional contest
Vanderbilt Dean's list
AP scholar with distinction
High school model student

Reasons: my major is math and I am very interested in applied math and statistics. But Vandy does not offer a statistics major nor an applied math major. Moreover, for my secondary major Econ, Vandy does not have a good connection of econ and math. And since I want to start my own enterprise after graduation, Nashville, a small city in the south, cannot provide me with enough international environment and internship/job opportunities.

Financial Aid Needed?:
No

Should I add some other schools? What are my chances for Stanford, UPenn? Will the reputation of my current school matter?

In writing my "why" essays, should I be creative and surprising or should I be straightforward and plain?

bumpppppppppppppppp

Vanderbilt’s a great school, so the prestige is certainly up there. And it’s great you’re doing well there too. I think you have a great chance at Penn, although Stanford is really just a crapshoot for anyone so it’s hard to say. Good luck!

Thank you! What do you guys think of my first semester’s course rigor? Is it reasonable? What do you think of the style of my essays?

go for ittt

When over half of your schools accept you, please abstain from choosing Cornell. Give some other untalented people a chance.

I am not sure about my chances at Cornell. My dream schools are UPenn and Stanford and I dont know their chances either.

If you were applying as a Junior I’d say you’re in at most of the schools. Unfortunately, you’re not. Since you’re applying as a Sophomore the college grades are more or less a tie breaker. They will be looking at your HS stuff primarily.

As for your chances…

Stanford - No. (Ignoring your stats, Stanford has ~2% acceptance. Freshman admits have much stronger stats. Transfers will be even more competitive).

UPenn - Unlikely, but possible. (Create a stellar application and you have a good shot. Anything but stellar and you probably won’t get in since your HS stats aren’t really UPenn level.

Cornell - Unlikely, but possible… CAS is Cornell’s 2nd most selective major. Not to mention that CAS isn’t really transfer friendly. (Unlike CALS/ILR/HM)

Chicago - You’re in. You probably would have gotten in as a freshman anyway. Go look at the ED thread if you don’t believe me.

Can’t say too much about the rest.

Brown and Columbia are unlikely simply because they have very low admit rates. JHU is an interesting choice. Can’t say too much about it. JHU actually has a lower transfer admittance rate than freshman admittance, so that’s not particularly helpin’ ya.

You probably would’ve gotten in at Northwestern. But I’m not too sure.

lol thank you

"They will be looking at your HS stuff primarily. " if I am a freshman?
Most schools including UPenn’s AO told me via email that their primary emphasis is on college stuff even if I am a freshman. But your assumption is that it is unlikely to get in primarily because of my HS stats
Also I got other completely opposite ideas about the chances. It is confusing because they suggest me to add Stanford. They said my HS and college stats are definitely UPenn level and should give Stanford a try.
I am confused, totally.

Yes, your hs stats are weighted heaviliy as a soph. transfer.

Stanford has a 2% acceptance rate. You would need perfect stats (better SAT and hs gpa) and amazing ECs to have a good shot. It’s probably worth applying everywhere else, although Columbia is also very unlikely.

Majoreco’s response seems accurate for chances, except I would say you’re not guaranteed for Chicago (but you still have a good chance) simply because they’re a bit more selective for transfers.

What about my hs stats and college stats for UPenn?

I’d say you have a good chance, definitely apply there.

I’ve been on the CC forums long enough to know one thing, really - if you didn’t get in for high school, then you probably wouldn’t have much of a decent chance of being admitted via transfer either.

unfortunately, two of my friends got into upenn via transfer but they didnt get in in high school. one of my friends got into Stanford through transfer though he didnt get even in UPenn ED in high school. Not mention those who got into NU, Cornell. They all applied as freshman and had similar hs stats as mine.

Also: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/1235248-chance-transfer-vandy-top-10-schools.html</a></p>

similar thread, one month ago, totally different chances.

lol this thread was supposed to give me a clearer view. It seems I need more reliable suggestions.

Incorrect.

[Penn Admissions: F.A.Q. for Transfer Admission to Penn](http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/applying/transferfaq.php)

You can add Stanford if you like, but if you go to the ED Stanford thread you’ll see that you have little chance. It’s possible though. But remember, ~2% acceptance. Interesting that a UPenn AO would tell you to add Stanford.

And your other thread is pretty much the same as this one.

Interesting how you think an above average high school record plus **one semester/b of college will get you into schools that you wouldn’t have gotten into originally. What happened to your friends is irrelevant because the competition for every year changes. That’s why I’d encourage you to apply wherever you want anyway. You might get lucky.

lol its getting more interesting and contradictory (“takes into consideration all academic credentials”). But thx anyway

bumpppppppp
