Chance as Class of 2016?

As a junior, I want to know if I'm on the right track or even have a chance at Tulane. I know I need to retake the ACT and take the SAT's but is there any other flaws?

Basic Info:
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Black
State: NY (Long Island)
School: Public/ URM- 6 blacks in my school at most.
GPA:
9th- 3.9 UW
10th- 4.0 UW
11th- 3.5 UW for 1st quarter
(I know 3.5 is bad but 2nd quarter I've been acing so I'm expecting at least a 3.8 by the end of the year plus IB weighting)

IB Grades are multiplied by 1.1 for weighting btw

SAT Reasoning Single Sitting: Not taken yet
SAT Reasoning Superscore: Not taken yet
SAT IIs:Not taken yet
ACT- 26 took it in 10th grade w/o studying. Taking it again in April
Class Rank: School doesn't rank

Course Load:
All honors 9th and 10th with AP World in 10th. IB Diploma Candidate for the next two years.

Junior Course load:
IB Math SL
IB Environmental Systems & Societies SL
IB English HL
IB History of the Americas HL
IB Spanish SL
IB Theory of Knowledge
IB Biology HL

It's pretty much the same for my senior year as well.

Extracurriculars (by the end of Grade 12 year):

Over 50 hours of Volunteer Work at my local hospital
Co-President of AIDS Awareness Committee since Sophomore Year
Along with IB Environmental Class, helped raise over $500 in two weeks for Conservation Program in Ethiopia

Planning to follow an OB/GYN this summer for 2 weeks.

Your chances are excellent, I am confident. BTW, 3.5 is not bad, especially given your challenging schedule. But since you are bringing it up for this year anyway, the 3.5 won’t even be seen by colleges and certainly your overall GPA is looking really strong, so that should not hold you back at all. You will probably do much better on the ACT or the SAT the next time you take them. You are very much on the right track. Assuming you score much better on one of the two tests, you will be in line for a nice merit scholarship, most likely.

I saw in your other posts the schools you are thinking about.
Just out of curiosity, what put Tulane on your radar?

Originally, I didn’t think about Tulane as a contender but I know someone who goes there and she is always saying how amazing it is. Plus, I’ve been reading some of the posts on here about tulane and it seems like a cool place to go to school. Only thing I’m not really sure about is the ethnic diversity. I go to an all-white school but I kind of wanted to venture out of that. Is Tulane still a good school for me?

Well, to be honest it is about 70% white or something like that, but it does have a larger African-American percentage than some of the other private schools some might compare it to, such as Duke or Vandy. The Asian population is increasing as well. However, I think you also have to take New Orleans itself into account in this regard. Tulane is so much a part and partner with the city, in some ways it is like NOLA is part of the school. Now your ethnic diversity just went up a bunch. I should also point out that Tulane, while it does have a sizable Northeast contingent, it also draws a lot of students from the south and Texas, as well as the Midwest and west. So you will get some different perspectives from that angle as well.

Tulane has an amazing professor (from what I hear) of African-American studies, Shayne Lee. e-mail=slee5@tulane.edu And here is a bit about him from the Tulane site: [Tulane University - School of Liberal Arts - Tulane University - School of Liberal Arts - People -Shayne Lee](http://tulane.edu/liberal-arts/african-and-african-diaspora-studies/shayne_lee1.cfm) I strongly encourage you to send him an e-mail, tell him a bit about yourself and what your questions are about Tulane and New Orleans and why, and see what he says. If nothing else it could prove really interesting.

Wow, thanks for the help and encouragement!

You have a great chance at Tulane - even Tulane honors, coming from a '14er.

Tulane loves NYC metro kids, including LI, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you got a nice scholarship but APPLY ASAP! I know you’re only a junior, but get it out over the summer! I have a friend who works in admissions and by mid-October (or something crazy like that) Tulane had filled all it’s Early Action spots! So even for perfectly qualified candidates, the University couldn’t do anything but send out deferrals since they had no room left.

Also, as for scholarships, work on your extracurriculars - especially volunteering. They love that here. As I’m sure you know, you have to work a big on your ACTs. I’m sure you could get in with a 26 (That’s a good, solid score), but they’d like to see higher scores for scholarships. Also, your GPA is GREAT if it’s out of 4.0. Is it? If it’s out of 100, then it’s pretty awful… :)

my apologies, didn’t see your extracurriculars in your post - but you’re certainly on a great track there. keep with it

Yeah, I have a ACT tutor so I’m hoping for a 30 minimum since I’ll be actually studying this time:)

Thanks for the tips, I definitely want to deal with applications over the summer! .

really? that is true? there were no more spots left for EA? i guess thats why there are so many people complaining about not getting an EA acceptance on this thread…

By any chance are you ethiopian

This thread is 2 years old, lol.

Yes and what an odd question to add to it!

I am wondering what’s up with this girl now?..Hopefully, she is doing alright. Merry XMAS.
