Chance at FAU?

Hey!

I was wondering what my chances would be for applying to FAU. I am a New York resident and my current unweighted GPA is a 3.4 while my weighted GPA is a 3.8-3.9. My SAT score is a 1530 but I just took it again and I’m confident I at least got a 1700 on it. Im in a ton of extracurricular activities including: Honor Society, Jazz Band, Year Book Club, Youth and Government, and Best Buddies. Outside of school, I volunteer at the community EMS center and have over 250+ hours of community service. I took AP Classes and Honors classes all 3 years so far. - AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP World Prep, Honors English, Honors Algebra 2/Trig, Honors Geometry

Thanks for your help! If you have an idea as to some other colleges I should apply to and what schools I should consider as safety schools feel free to comment them!

Bump?

Your stats (weighted GPA/SAT) seem to jibe with the mid-range for the freshman profile:

Why FAU from out-of-state? It’s a nice school; my son dual enrolls there and we live less than 2 miles away. IMHO FAU is an up-and-coming university. But I’m not sure I’d pay OOS tuition for it.

Just curious.

FAU makes a ton of sense for a local kid living at home with Bright Futures and an academic scholarship bringing the cost close to free.

That’s exactly what I think @ClarinetDad16 . . . but a student from NY?

I know someone, very loosely, who went to FAU from the northeast and has close to $100K in student loan debt. That doesn’t seem like the best plan.

@SouthFloridaMom9 and @ClarinetDad16 thanks for your reply! I recently visited both FAU and University of Tampa while I was in Florida. Both schools seem like such great schools! I’m trying to get out of NY because I have family in Florida and felt like one of those schools would be my best bet? Do you have any other recommendations for a student coming from NY? Cheaper colleges with maybe the same stats? I greatly appreciate your input and help

I thought you might have family in Florida.

Have you looked at Flagler College? My son hears from them constantly - not really his cup of tea because he is more STEM oriented, but perhaps you can get money there?

Also, how about Stetson? I can’t recall their mid-range stats off-hand.

Consider Florida Poly too (if you’re into STEM at all). It’s a new public university, and they’re trying to attract students with merit $$$. Florida Poly is in Lakeland, FL (central FL).

Believe me, FAU is more impressive than I thought it would be, and they’re doing lots of new things there. Boca is a wonderful community too (though expensive). You’d probably like it here. I just would be very careful with OOS tuition. You’re going to run into that problem at all the Florida public universities.

Awesome! Thank for all this great info @SouthFloridaMom9 I will definitely look into some of theses colleges and see what would be most beneficial for me as an OOS resident. Im hoping if I stay in Florida for a year, I may be able to request the ability to pay IS Tuition instead? Do you think that would be an option at some of Florida’s public universities? Thanks again for all your help. It definitely sheds some light on my situation as a first generation college student

See these guidelines pertaining to Florida residency requirements for tuition purposes:

From personal experience, when my son did his FSU and FL Poly applications I had to provide all kinds of information . . . voter registration #, car title info, driver’s license #, etc.

ETA: You’re welcome, and I hope it all works out!
