Hey, guys. I was wondering if any one had any advice about UVA and UNC (obviously). I currently have a 3.95 weighed GPA, and I take Honors and academic classes. I've played tennis for the last two years (plan to for all four years, next year I'll alt. between varsity and JV), started volunteering two summers ago (but had to stop at the end of summer for personal reasons; I hope to start again after the school year ends), and on newspaper staff, spanish club, science club, Interact club, book club, Teen Advisory board of my library and by next year should be inducted into NHS and Spanish NHS.

I've taken the SATs (seventh grade year) and got a 1500/2400. I expect to do well in May when I take them again. And I also plan on taking about four APs.

I know it'll probably be a long shot because I've heard these schools mainly like in-state (I'm from up north), but what are my chances? Any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

ehhh the way you’re going, you have a slight chance. but UVA and UNC are in the top 5 public schools in the country. they, by their rules, have to take 80% or more from isntate. meaning only 18-20% come from out of state. this means that the out of staters are the BEST of the BEST. a 1500 DEFINITELY won’t do. you need atleast a 2100 for both schools. and the GPA isn’t bad but could be raised a little.
you may want to do a sport all year round instead of just for one season and instead of being in the clubs, hold a leadership position in the clubs
hope the next two years go well for ya. good luck!

Thanks. And yeah, I know that a 1500 sucks. But it was my score from taking the SATs in MIDDLE school, not high. Then, it was great, but now… I think I should be able to get around a 1900-ish. That’s what I got on my last practice, at least. And taking the test this may won’t count, because I’m just a sophomore. I have all summer after that to bump my score up more.

Right now, math is what is bringing my GPA below a 4.0. Next year, I’ll have a different teacher (not to place blame, but I’ve had the same teacher the last two years, and his tests are EPIC. (and not in a good way)) I’m close to having around a 4.1-4.2, though, it’s just that stupid math grade.

I plan on running for leadership positions in three of the clubs, but the TAB and Student managing our Band doesn’t have a thing like that, so.

Anyone else? : )

Also, if I can speak another language (not fluent, but proficient), would that help?

Please chance me. :)

Both of these schools are much harder for out of state students to be accepted into. For that reason you really need to step way above in areas such as the SAT, EC’s, and leadership positions. It seems you have time to bump up your app and you will definitely want to take the SAT subject tests as soon as you finish the relevent courses. Overall, as of right now I would say they are both reaches just because of your out of state status but then again it’s pretty hard to tell without scores. Good Luck!

Sat score 2190. sat biology e- 650, sat mathematics level 2- 720. iMy gpa is 2.5 unweighted although I rank in the top 25%. how are my chances of getting into UNC Chapel Hill?

Sam- UVA has to take 25% OOS

Excluding AP classes (which I have to wait until next year to take due to my school’s requirement), my GPA should stay at MIN.: 3.87 - 3.9. If I have really good SAT scores and explain in an essay why my freshman GPA was lower than normal (3.85) (personal reasons), would that help a little?

And right now, my school doesn’t give out ranks until senior year, but I’m estimated around 25/250, maybe higher.

P.S. Because my school doesn’t let sophomores take APs, is it okay that I’m taking all available honors and academic classes? And taking harder classes like Anatomy and Physiology (it’s killer at my school).

Wow, so much bad information here. Yes, UVA and UNC-Chapel Hill are both very difficult to gain admission to as an OOS applicant. Several numbers and percentages have been thrown out about admissions statistics for both, all wrong. North Carolina law mandates that 83% of students at UNC-Chapel Hill be in-state, leaving 17% of the spots for OOS students. Virginia law mandates that 2/3 of students at UVA be in-state, leaving 1/3 (roughly 33%) of the spots for OOS students. Neither is impossible, but very difficult all the same.

Thanks for replying guys.

Has anyone applied/been accepted to UVA and UNC Chapel Hill? What were your stats?

And I’m not sure if I asked this before, but are there different admissions requirements for different majors (or different application types that certain majors are leaning towards)? ((if that makes sense)). I plan on majoring in international relations, hopefully middle east concentration with appropriate language minor or something similar. Any ideas?
