Chance for 2013 admission?

Hi,

I intend on applying to the U of M along with multiple other colleges in hopes of getting a decent education towards a computer science major. I would like to know my overall chance of getting accepted into the College of Liberal Arts.

GPA: 3.3 (Strong up curve after a VERY slow start freshman year, I am expecting to go up to a 3.4 by the end of this year)
Class Rank: Top 35%
ACT: Taking it in April.
PSAT: 59 in all three categories

I will be the first generation in my immediate family to go to college.
I have missed 1 day of school from 9th-11th grade.

Freshman/Sophomore Electives: Pre-Engineering, Manufacturing, Concert Band

Thanks.

Your gpa and class rank are rather low although a strong ACT score could make up for it. You will likely need a much better score than what you got on the PSAT. You can look here [Academic Profile](Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions) and see the stats of admitted students to CLA.

Recently got accepted to the CLA. I had a similar Class rank and GPA (a bit better than you), and a 26 ACT. If you can take AP’s and Honors for your senior year, do it; the worst it’ll do to you is make you work harder than usual. Study for your ACT (shoot for a 27+), get your GPA up, and you should be fine.

Our school is relatively small and only offers 1 AP and no honors. I took a pre-act test our school offered that was apparently approved by the ACT and got a 28 on it, this was at the start of the year.

What should I aim for on the ACT for a decent chance?

28 would put you in borderline territory.

As much as I want to say you’ll get in, I think it’s a definite reach. Score like 33+ on the ACT and you’ll stand a much better chance. If you do the same on the ACT as you did on the PSAT, you’ll score in the 26-27 range which will make you borderline.

When I applied last year, I had a 3.7 GPA, 31 ACT and 11 AP’s. I was ** waitlisted ** for CLA (I’m from out of state though, so I don’t know if that matters). I was accepted around May but that still goes to show how much they’re cracking down on admissions.

I think if you’re from Minnesota you’ll have much higher chances. Good luck though!

Yeah, I think they care a lot about in state versus out of state, as well as relatives who are alumni.
