chance for admission and merit based aid

DD SATs: first time: 600 math/610 critical reading/580 writing
second time: 650 math/550 critical reading/600 writing
thus, best effort is 650/610 = 1260 +600 writing

DD has tremendous academics and extracurriculars - mostly honors/ap classes; about 3.8 unweighted; #11 out of 527; varsity lacrosse - 2 yrs; jv lacrosse captain; 10 yrs figure skating; 7 years jazz dancing/hip hop; member of national honor society, math honor society, spanish honor society, Spanish grades 7-12; Russian grades 10-12

She really does not want to take the SATs again. But we would like to see her get a significant merit award. Website says most merit scholarship recipients were top 10%, some in top 5% (she qualifies); 1300 SATs. Will she be excluded just by SATs? If not excluded, would she likely get a small award? Any ideas what she could expect?

Can we expect an acceptance from Delaware for admissions?

From what I've heard around here(I'm a student at UD now) out of state(OOS) scholarships are few and far between and are given at random.

I got a scholarship as an OOS student and it covers most of my tuition. I have met far smarter students with better SATs, GPAs, extracurriculars and they got nothing. I have also met kids who I'd consider like me(a minority in their field as well) and they got like $1000 a year.... chump change. As an applicant I had a 3.9 u/w, 4.5ish weighted, 28 ACT, an SAT so bad I did NOT send them in but they were on my HS transcript, female in engineering, AP/honors in everything I could, a handful of college courses, varsity sports, statewide leadership positions, etc, etc.

I will add that your DD's "tremendous" academics & extracurriculars seem about average for what I see in the honors program. Not trying to be negative but the students coming into DE are pretty top of their game... at least in the honors program and from what I've seen most of the scholarships go to students in the honors program. DE may not be well known for being top notch but it's getting harder and harder each year and there is word going around that UD is trying to increase in state numbers(size) and decrease the size of the out of state numbers... bad news for OOS students. I think she has a good chance at acceptance but merit aid will be harder to get.

Good luck!

... also when I say merit scholarships are given at random I don't really mean at random. I mean that there doesn't seem to be any one formula in getting one and you just have to be lucky.

she shouldn't have a problem getting in but i got zip with a 1910 sat 600m 650v 660w 17/174 ranking and 93 gpa with basically the hardest courses my school offers (i'm in delaware now actually for my delaworld 101 orientation which begins in like an hour)

We're OOS and my daughter had 2020 SATs, all honors/APs, 4.2 semiweighted GPA, extracurriculars/volunteerism and a small job. She got into honors at her other choices along with $$$. She was OOS at 2 other well regarded state schools and they were happy to send honors and cash her way as well as a private school - all ranked the same or higher than UD. She didn't get into honors at UD and they gave her $0 in aid. Called to see why - basically told she wan't good enough. The moral of our story is - if you're OOS, don't expect anything from UD unless you fit into some unknown niche. We're hoping that once she gets there they will be more considerate with funds but not holding our breath.

Most of these posts seem quite accurate from my experience as well. I think that Delaware is an outstanding school and most students fall into the 1200-1310 range on the SAT (not counting writing). It IS a competitive school and they are very student friendly, hence they have dropped their Early Decision program for the fall.

Students at Delaware tend to be well-rounded but not overly stressed which is nice - I think Delaware appears to expect excellence but not perfection which seems like the best way to go. I have yet to hear from a student who was disappointed in their experience. :)

GL

just wondering if anyone thinks that being a solid figure skater with 11 yrs experience who has tested and reached novice level, working on junior in moves and pre-gold in ice dancing would be the niche that delaware might be willing to give merit aid for?

Thanks for all posts.

My daughter has passed senior moves and junior freestyle, skated synchro and freestyle for 10 years and has been coaching. In her case, it didn't impress them.

how were her grades, sats, and class standing, herbrokemom?

P.S. I like you screen name!!

Her "stats" are posted above. Her school doesn't do class rank (actually they do - they have to name a valedictorian - but they won't release that info to you or to colleges) and only tells you by 25th percentiles and she was in the top 25%. I figure that you're more likely to get $$ as a female in a traditionally male major (maybe physics, engineering etc) or one that has fewer applicants.

thanks again for everyone's perspective.

*Figure Skating at Delaware *

Delaware as a university is known as 'the' place to train if you are a skater going into college. That being said, most of the admissions office staff are used to seeing skaters at the top of their game - ie senior level individual skaters - though accomplished juniors are the pool as well.

That said, they know that figure skating is a HUGE draw for the university and like that keep that atmosphere there.

Yeah, when your ice is home to Kimmie Meissner, it's hard for applicants to stand out as something special.

I got 6,000/yr with a 1310 SAT, 2nd in class, and no amazing extracurriculars. But I really do get the feeling scholarships are given out kinda randomly; some of my friends had higher SATs and better extracurriculars and got less, but others had lower stats and got more. If you want a guarentee for a scholarship, I'd suggest taking the SATs once more.

are u out of state, ebola? just wondering.

yup, pennsylvania
