Chance for BC!??!!?

Thanks for taking a look at this. If you don't mind, what are my chances for BC? I applied EA...

GPA UW: 4.0 W: 4.0 (Almost impossible to get anything above a 4.0 at my school, only 2 kids have this)

Ranking: 30 of 448 (top 120 kids have 4.0 W GPA, 80 have 4.0 UW)

SAT: 2000 superscore, 680CR, 670W, 650M
SAT II: 690 Math 2, 710 US History, 770 Chem
ACT: 31 Composite, 35 English, 29 Math, 30 Reading, 31 Science, 32 Writing + English
EC: Cross country, outdoor & indoor track, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, charity proj w/superintendent to raise $17,500 for disadvantaged kids, worked at restaurant 10 hrs/wk for 17 mos., I'm a tour guide for new students at my school, mock trial, on varsity "quiz bowl" team (currently competing regionally in NYC, Connecticut, Hudson Valley, NJ on TV, it's called The Challenge). I'm a scholar athlete for all three xc/track seasons (NY state award), uhh, I'm sure I have some other things that aren't popping in my head right now.

NHS at Warwick Valley High School (my school) requires many tutoring hours/yr (upwards of 20) and Mu Alpha Theta requires another 20.

AP's: US History - 5, Chemistry - 5, currently in Bio and Calc AB (my HS doesn't offer too many AP's, and they don't run every period of the day, so this is the max I could fit.)

Other helpful classes: Currently teaching an AP Chemistry lab class 2x/wk, with other days being used as prep days. I run through and modify all labs before the students do them. Experience in photography, tv communications. Also in a literature and philosophy class.

This year, 5 classes on a given day may be comprised of science classes (AP Chem lab, AP Bio, Bio lab, Physics, Physics lab.) Please note that my school does NOT offer AP Physics, and this is the only reason why I didn't take it.

Have taken/will have taken the following sciences: Earth Science, Physics, AP Chem, AP Bio.
Have taken/will have taken the following math: Everything up to Calc AB.

Applying to the College of Arts and Sciences. I'm thinking of doing Biochem, with some neuroscience/psychology thrown in for fun with a pre-med track. I'm a hispanic male, and a first gen college student. (UPenn's Biological Basis of Behavior program is exactly the type of thing I'm looking to do.)

Let me know if there's something I'm missing...

Other schools I'm applying to:

UVA, UVM, BU, UD, Cornell, Princeton, Tufts, Notre Dame, UPenn (yes, a few crapshoots)

Thank you so much for taking time out of your holiday to read this. Happy Thanksgiving!!

Hi okay i think you have a great chance at BC cuz you seem like a strong candidate as well as for UPenn, notre dame, BU, maybe UPenn and Tufts and im unsure of the rest…god job and good luck

thanks a lot! anyone else please?

your scores aren’t exactly optimal.
But your extra currics both academic & others are more than enough to make up for it.

bump 10char

ba bump ba bump bump.

BC - match - you’ll probably be accepted since you applied EA
BU - match - you’ll be accepted almost for certain
UVM - match - you’ll be accepted almost for certain
UVA - slight reach - a good chance
Cornell - high reach. Probably not because of SATs
Princeton - No
Tufts - Reach. Probably not because of SATs, but a slightly better chance than Cornell
Notre Dame - Reach. 50% chance. Less chance than at UVA
UPenn - high reach. You may have had a slight shot EA, but probably not on regular decision.

Just my guesses - I could be totally wrong. Is your school competitive or are there so many 4.0s because of grade inflation? If your school is really tough, you’re generally in better shape.

My school is rough. Academically, we are the best in the county, and one of the best in the region and state of New York. The number on the site I looked up was wrong…spoke to my guidance counselor today and only top 40 have a 4.0 UW GPA, a little less than top 10%. My school has never seen a class like mine. Top 10-40 are separated by 5 pts or so. Guidance calls us the “Class of the Overachievers”, and only two people have a GPA >4.0. Valedictorian 4.4, Salutatorian 4.1. AP Chem is the hardest AP we offer right now, and, unlike certain other schools, AP’s at Warwick are very hard classes. I know some schools around here that treat them like honors classes. AP’s here are extremely rigorous. Average score on AP Chem in my HS in 2010 was a 4.8. Bio was a 4.5. History was a 4.1. Tough stuff… Why does EA give me an advantage with BC?

According to CollegeBoard, 2400 were admitted EA last year. There are only 2100 in the freshman class. Now, only about 750 attend, but still that’s a large % of the class. BC seems to like students who really like BC and they probably try to ferret that out on the application. Their EA yield isn’t great and they probably want to improve it. Did you make a big deal about loving BC and did you visit?

At my school last year, four were accepted to BC. One had a lower GPA than you, but higher SATs, one had a similar GPA, but lower SATs, and two had similar GPAs and SATs.

I have the impression from these cases that they like students with sports and lots of school involvement - which all three had except the one with the high SATs - he had slightly less involvement in school, but great SATs that really did not reflect his grades - kind of a slacker, I guess. Only one ending up attending - the lower SAT/higher GPA kid.

Unfortunately, it’s kinda difficult to write about BC, as there is no extra essay on their supplement nor anything of substance…I did visit and I love it. I’ve been in contact with the admissions reps to update my app with things like NHS acceptance…

Hmm.

Good luck, I think you’ll make it, from what you’ve said.

Hope so…
