Chance for Brown

Hi all! I’m a current junior that is planning on applying ED to Brown in the coming fall.

My SAT score is a 1480. Right now I’m trying to decide if it’s worth taking it once again, or should I try taking the ACT? I just really wish it was in the 1500s.

Throughout high school I’ve taken all honors and AP classes, and I maintain a 4.0 GPA.

AP scores: APUSH (4)

This year I will be taking the AP american government test, the AP Spanish test, and the AP Lang test.
I think right now it seems reasonable to assume I’ll get a 4 or 5 on each.

I do online high school in order to pursue ballet pre-professionally at one of the world’s best/most reputable ballet schools/companies. I think I am going to go to college instead of becoming a trainee with the company.

Likely majors:
internation relations or public policy.

Extracurriculars:
-Ballet Training 24+ hours weekly
-Five week summer courses (some on full scholarship) at places like the School of American Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, San francisco Ballet, and Boston Ballet.
-I’ve founded and run a website that has readership from more than 50 countries. We also have 25,000 social media followers. I don’t want to delve into the details for privacy reasons. The main premise is based on service and education.

  • Other local service projects about racism, sexism, etc.

Hooks (?) Don’t really want this to be called a hook lol
I’ve had some pretty horrific stuff happen to immediate family members. My main essay will probably discuss the impact it has had on my goals for the future. I’ll also discuss how, for a large portion of my childhood and early adolescence, I was fully consumed with guilt and struggled with wondering why I was spared.

I’m also likely applying to BC, UNC chapel hill, Vandy, Georgetown, Wesleyan, and maybe Stanford (LOL). This is of course dependent on my Brown results.

Any thoughts on Safety schools would be great.

Was the 1480 your first try? If so, I’d say take that one more time and also take the ACT, as long as it’s not too much of an issue to spend the extra money or Saturday morning. It’s not a score that would keep you out anywhere (but for being on the low side for Stanford), but I think you should try. I think you’re going to have to articulate your “intellectual vitality,” as it’s been called, and how it works in tandem with your dance training. Your passion for ballet is good, but your academic strength always comes first.

I’d say:
Brown: Defer
BC: Waitlist
UNC: Accept
Vandy: Waitlist
Georgetown: Waitlist/Reject
Wesleyan: Accept
Stanford: Reject

Not sure about safety schools. Best of luck! Chance me back? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1966406-chance-me-upenn-ed-yale-brown-princeton-etc-will-chance-back-p1.html

I think you have a good chance of getting in, though it is always hard to say given that Brown is so hard to get into… That said, your GPA is impressive and your SAT is pretty strong. I think that it really helps that you have been so dedicated to ballet – such dedication is much, much more important than just doing a bunch of EC’s to build up your application.

I am truly sorry that you had to go through the suffering involved with what happened to your family, but I think that writing about this in your essay would give an incredible insight into who you are as a person.

If I were you, I’d be very optimistic, but you also need to understand that Brown is a very good school… and very good schools are very unpredictable. As for safeties, I’d say BC is just below a match but not quite a safety – from that, I would consider any schools around or below NYU, BU, and Northeastern to be safeties.

I also look to apply to Brown ED in the upcoming fall, so I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at my thread and give your thoughts! I wish you the best of luck!
