*isn't applicable, I haven't taken any classes at the high school. I am hoping my GC will write on my rec how I am in relation to other dual enrollment students. she has told me I am the best she's seen

I am a Washingtonian white male from a family with one college-educated parent, and an income of ~130k. I take full time college classes as a dual enrolled high school student. For half of 9th grade and all of 10th I attended online school (that didn't offer honors or AP classes at the time) to pursue a semi-professional skiing career. After that I started attending comm college classes as a dual enrolled student to focus on school and skiing simultaneously, as the college classes allow me to travel.

*This class is the highlight of my transcript. I had to get permission from the math department to take it. It is for gifted math lovers and is completely proof based. The series (I-III) is equivalent to the entire lower-level undergrad math curriculum at UW. Thus it is equivalent to: Calc I-III, Linear Algebra, Diff Eq, and Intro to Proofs, but all of these classes are covered at an accelerated and abstract level. Also, you need 4.0s in Calc I and II or a 5 on AP Calc BC to be a candidate to take it. Further, taking this class demonstrates initiative on my part because I had to contact the math department and jump through several hoops to be allowed to take the class, when I could've stuck to comm college. I will write about this.

ECs:

Skiing (my only strength): Have 5 sponsors who supply me with all of my gear at the beginning of every season. Managed my own website. Won 10+ state and national level competitions. Team captain of my freeski team for 2 years. Ranked top 10 in North America for several years. Put my passion for skiing before everything (hence online school), so I'll try and tie that in with my new genuine passion for math and science. I will write about putting my passions first in my essays.

-20 hrs/week for 40 weeks/year x 2 years = 1600hrs

Awards:
-President's list spring quarter (highest academic award at my comm college).

Rec's
GC: should be okay. I'm going to try and get her to allude to the fact that my class rank isn't applicable, and get her to write about how I'm the best DE student she's seen (which she has told me).
Teacher 1: Should be good, from the professor who is teaching me math at UW.
Teacher 2: Should be good, from my philosophy professor, others have told me I am a natural philosopher so I hope he feels the same. I have read he is an extremely supportive prof. so it at least won't be make a negative contribution to my app.

Chance me and I'll chance back!

–also I’m in Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society which is the highest for Comm Colleges

Alright, well, ordinarily I’d say those would be mid-reaches for someone with your academic standing (awesome GPA and test scores though!), but the fact that you’re a nationally ranked athlete is SUCH a hook. Like a mega-hook. Dude, you’ll be just fine in admissions :)

Thanks @Thebeatlestoday! By academic standing are you referring to my gpa? If so – I know! I wish I would’ve worked harder in 9th and the first half of 10th but I didn’t and know I have to live with it :(

I’m a current Berkeley student and I definitely think you’re exactly the kind of applicant Berkeley seeks out.
I’m really not familiar with UW so I can’t fairly chance you there.
As for UChicago, I firmly believe that the essays are a crucial component of your application so start working on them immediately. The essays are truly the best way to distinguish yourself from the masses of other applicants with similar extracurriculars and transcript.

Well done on your great SAT and SAT II results! You’re academic results will serve you very well in whatever university you apply to. The only thing that may hold you back is that of course sometimes a university needs a certain type of applicant such as maybe more athletes etc.

U of W: good chance
U of B: competitive
U of C: Sorry I can’t comment I don’t know enough.

*but since you are a great skiier this will definitely make you stand out wherever you apply.

just write a great essay and I am sure you will be a great prospective applicant for any tertiary institutution!

Thanks everyone! Anyone else?

Bahmppppppppp

Boammpopopppp

bump for the ratchets?

bump for the ratchez?

Very impressive! Congratulations on your accomplishments. I can’t see how any of those universities can reject you.

By the way, I have one kid @ UW and one @ uchicago, both studying math.

bahmppppppp

10 char bump

Apply to Stanford.

anyone else?

bump 10 char

bump for the kids?

For most of the schools you seem to be a good fit. Chicago and Berkeley were your two big ones, however, and I’ll comment on those.

Chicago: Low Reach (they LOOOOOOVE athletes)
Berkeley: Match (they’re indifferent toward athletes, but your GPA helps you stand out)
