Chance for Georgetown/Duke/Berkeley/Ole Miss/Brown

I'm currently a junior and was planning my senior classes and wondering about the chances for the above listed colleges and also advise on what classes I should talk for my senior year.

Freshman year: (lived abroad in Germany, went to a German public school. I am 100% American and did not speak any German before going into this school at 8th grade)

-Math
-Biology
-Chemistry
-Physics
-English*
-French
-German
-History
-Politics
-Art/Music (semester long)
-NWT (an natural science class)
-Religion
-(gym)

*As an American, the English class was too easy for me, so I self-taught myself, reading eight books in the year (Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.) and wrote essays on them that a private American tutor checked for me

I did not take any sports/extracurricular activities this year, as German public schools don't offer those, but I did join a debate team started by a student.

Sophomore (in US):

-Honors English
-Honors Bio
-Honor Algebra 2
-World Cultures
-Spanish 1
-German 3
-(gym)

I volunteered at a hospital for nine months and joined photo club. Also completed an independent IT project.

Junior:

-Honors American Lit.
-AP pre-calculus
-AP US History
-Environmental Geo-science
-Spanish 3 (accelerated Spanish 2)
-Honors German 4
-Health

I continued volunteering and photo club and also did an Education apprenticeship and joined choir.

As a senior I am planning:

-2 Semester classes of English (as of right now, undecided on which ones specifically)
-Forensics
-AP Human Anatomy
-Comparative Religions

I will be graduating early and going on a five month exchange to Spain.

So how good are my chances? And what could I do to improve them? Are these universities realistic for me and also, what kind of safety/matches could you recommend?

first of all, you have some worldly experiences that you should definitely draw on when writing your applications. this stands out on the transcript and will certainly make you more noticeable than the cookie cutter applicant.

your ec’s are pretty good. what did your it project entail? you should elaborate. your exchange in spain is also very interesting.

did your school not have many ap’s? most top school contenders take at least three or four in junior/senior years. if it doesn’t, your course load looks good. if it does offer more, i’d recommend taking at least 4 ap’s as a senior since you didn’t do any/many in soph/junior year.

then it simply comes down to standardized test scores. what did you get on the sat? you should also take some subject tests. really, your stats look but its the scores that matter most. aim for 2200+

Thanks! What would you recommend as a safety school? I talked to my guidance counselor and next year I should be able to fit in two more AP semester classes. Would two as a junior and three as a senior be enough?

it’s hard to know. i’m actually a sophomore, was planning on taking 2 aps junior and three senior, but from what i’ve seen on cc people who get in/are striving to get in to ivies take more. IMHO, though, five seems like plenty and as long as you show you’re smart by getting good scores/sats and have unique ec’s i wouldn’t think it’d make a difference. who knows, though, they’re ivies!

IDK about you, but AP Human Anatomy and AP Pre-Calculus are not real AP Classes…

Try to self study AP’s so that you get 2-4 done as a junior. That is the maximum you’ll need for college as a junior [Others will do more, but its okay].

Also, on college apps, talk about the Germany experience and how it has shaped you. It will make you more desirable for college.

Lastly, I’d give you a safety/match school, but I have no idea what your interests are!

However, if linguistics is your thing, assuming your SAT/ACT score [Which you have not told us] is high enough, UVA [Virginia] would be a fantastic match

At my school, they’re listed under AP classes. I thought this counted on a college level, but thank you for bringing that to my attention! Could you maybe send me a link/list of AP classes that you know for sure count to colleges?

As for my interests, nursing or education (a teacher). Thank you!
