Chance for Merit Scholarship?

Hi, I am sorry for this but I want to have some realistic expectations as my D18 begins the application process. She just got her latest ACT results and hoping this will help with chancing her for Merit at BMC. Obviously nobody has a crystal ball but curious if this gives her a fighting chance at some sort of merit money. We will not qualify for much, if any, need based financial aid but we can’t afford the full cost of attendance.

GPA: 4.5 (w) 3.9 (uw)
Rigor (upon graduation): 8 AP, 10 Honors (taken highest level options)
Rank (currently): 4/344
ACT: 34 (36/31/35/32)
Intended Major: Russian and double major in either Int’l Studies or Economics (still figuring that out, maybe a science even)
Leadership/ECs: Captain, Varsity FH (3 yr varsity)* being softly recruited by BMC, Varsity Ski Racing 4 yrs, Pres. German Honors Society; Principal Horn in award winning Wind Ensemble (nationally recognized school program).

Multiple Honor Societies: Math, Science, German, National
Awards etc: Nom for Governor’s School for Eng & Tech, Girls State, Attended Drexel summer college program etc etc
Work: Multiple jobs
Lots of Volunteering incl. Animal Shelter, Youth FH Coach, etc

Your best bet is probably to look through the results thread for the class of 2021 (& perhaps 2020) and see who received presidential scholarships. Stats looks really good, BMC just doesn’t seem to give out all that much merit money.

Good luck!

Thanks @arc918! I did actually pour through the threads and google searched as well but didn’t turn up too much data…it does seem that most people who received some form of Merit $$ were a 35 ACT so it seems to definitely be a long shot.

Bryn Mawr is has very been generous with merit aid for incoming freshman (particularly those who did ED). My D and many of her friends got more than expected. However, don’t expect anything the following year. D and all of her friends were given no aid after that.

@merlinmom thanks for that information, so their merit aid is only for first year it seems? Interesting.

@merlinmom - could you please explain your comment about no merit aid after the first year? That seems odd given the information below from their website which states they they are “renewable provided the student is enrolled full time at BM.” Is that not the case?

U.S. citizens and permanent residents admitted to Bryn Mawr College as first-time undergraduate students are eligible for the Bryn Mawr Merit Scholarship or the Bryn Mawr Presidential Scholarship regardless of demonstrated need. No additional application is required. Applicants are evaluated through a holistic review process of materials including, but not limited to, academic coursework and performance, involvement in school and community, leadership qualities, letters of recommendation, quality and content of writing, and potential to contribute in meaningful ways to the Bryn Mawr community.

These scholarships range from $12,000-$30,000 per year and are awarded for a maximum of eight semesters. They are renewable provided that the student is enrolled full-time at Bryn Mawr. Scholarships are non-negotiable and only awarded at the time of admission. The Bryn Mawr Merit Scholarship and the Bryn Mawr Presidential Scholarship, in conjunction with other sources of financial aid and entitlements, cannot exceed the cost of attendance.

This would be great to know! I’m wondering whether they make it very clear upon admission about how long any awarded scholarships apply or if it really becomes more of a year-by-year process.
