Chance for NYU Stern

I am currently a junior at one of the best schools in the nation (top 40 according to us news). Trust me its nothing to brag about, we're all getting our rear ends kicked hard. But I just wanted to mention that so that you guys would get an idea for why my GPA is so low. Talking about GPA, here are my stats:

GPA: 3.4 UW (yea heckka low)
SAT I: 2360 (M: 800 CR:800 W:760) Superscore: 2400 (took it like twice)
ACT: 34 (M: 36 S: 35 R: 33 W:33)
SAT II: Math 2: 800; Lit: 770; Bio:800; Chem:780
AP: Comp Sci (5) {Last year}
Bio; Chem; Lit; Lang; Stats {This year}
Class Schedule Junior Year:

AP Stats
AP Bio
AP Chem
Honors English
Honors Pre-Calc
AP US - not takin the test its useless for what I want to do; just did it for weighted GPA

My schedule may seem easy to you guys but I'm taking this at one of the best math and science high schools in the country. (Again not trying to brag but to explain the relation between low GPA and classes)

ECs:
Sports:
2 years of basketball
1 year of track (so far.. probably going to continue)

Clubs:
President of Bio Medical Research Club
DECA
Alternative Energy Secretary

I was a Bio Olympiad Semi Finalist last year
I am going to take Chem Olympiad this year.(Probably not going to do too well, but its worth a try.)

Did a Projects Abroad Program to Tanzania last summer where I had the opportunity to work as an intern in a hospital in rural Tanzania. I pretty much shadowed a doctor for about 2 weeks along with learning about how hospitals are in a foreign country. Along with this we went on a 5 day trip through villages and provided clinical care and helped the people there set up a local clinic available to them 24/7. Really fun!!!!!!

I also shadowed a nephrologist for around 30-40 hours last summer.

Founder of a non-profit organization in which we learn about finance and the stock market while at the same time donating our profits to the local charity. (A little more complex than this but don't really want to get into the details of it just yet (sorry). But in terms of importance and significance, I believe this is by far my best EC. And also I've gotten professors from Haas and Standard GSB to come give a lecture/seminar)

210 Hours of Volunteer Hours (Mostly at the hospital) (Probably going to stop volunteering now, I think its enough)

Also this summer I'm traveling to rural India to plan + build an electrical wiring system that will supply electricity to 5-10 villages. I'm doing this with a non-profit international company.

Applied for Medical Research Program over the summer.
Applied to LBW in Upenn for the summer.

And I don't think there are going to be much changes to my application in the following year except for maybe/hopefully medical research paper published and LBW at Penn and maybe a few volunteer positions.

So there it is!!! Please chance!!!

You have a perfect score SAT… there are only a few hundred students that score that every year.

2400 is basically an auto-admit to NYU Stern, and probably a few other mid-high tier schools as well, such as - Brown, Cornell, Notre Dame, Umich Ross, Northwestern, etc.

A 2,400 SAT does not make a candidate an auto-admit to Brown, Cornell or Northwestern. Notre Dame and UMich, with OP’s GPA, probably.

There are plenty of applicants with 2,400 SAT scores who apply to Brown, Cornell and Northwestern and some of them are rejected. These schools, like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, MIT, UChicago, etc. get plenty of applicants with 4.0 GPAs and 2,400 SATs. In the world of elite colleges, a 2,400 SAT is something they can easily pass over and not care.

Is it impressive? Sure. Is it an auto-admit? No.

Hey thanks for the info guys, really appreciate it. And I got a 2400 superscored. And yea, I totally agree with you NYU2013, with my GPA that SAT and ACT aren’t gonna do much. But still I’m trying to cover up GPA with ECs.

LOL I definitely didn’t say it was an auto-admit at HYP or any of those Ivies.

Also, I am answering the OPs question, and Yes, I believe you have a 100% chance of getting into Stern with a high chance of receiving merit aid.

Yeah, you’ll probably get in. Is there the odd chance that you won’t? Sure. Your GPA is low. But I’m sure your insanely high SAT score and the fact that you go to a good school will make up for that.

Haha yea I got what u mean azndude3194. Stern is for sure my top choice and as for the Ivies, its always a crap shoot!!! I’m just very happy I took the time to study for my SATs cause thats kinda what’s lifting me now. And thank you Anapestic for the chance!!!

Np, Why is it your top choice? With that score, you should be thinking about Wharton / HY if you want to do Finance and then eventually IB. If you really want to go to NY, then apply for Columbia. It’s better than NYU in every way. You should also consider some semi-target schools that will give you a ton of merit money.

Haha azndude3194 thank you!! But the thing is that no matter my testing scores or ECs, my GPA is going to be a huge factor. And with the GPA I have Wharton and Columbia are kinda out of the picture. And so I only Investment Banking target school that I even had a chance to get into was NYU Stern. And when I visited NYU, I instantly loved urban campus, the opportunities for IB internships that are literally down the street, and most of all NYC!!! But I’m still going to apply for Wharton and Columbia for sure. I mean who would reject an education in finance from Wharton!!! LOL

dude totally amazing 2400 holy cow dude

everythings pretty damn good but most of your ECs are science related with hospitals and stuff. ECs with a more business focus wouldve been very helpful

only criteria missing is a high gpa, although 3.4 is not terrible. idk what world the user NYU2013 is living on. i think you can disregard his comment lol. 2400 sat is a huge achievement and something that any school would take into deep consideration, even though sat is prob the least important part of college admissions

great job so far. just realized you’re a junior, so you have time to bump up the gpa a bit!
o work on gpa
o pursue your business passion in ECs; continue with the org. you founded
o start thinking about how you will answer supplement/essay questions

i believe you have a huge chance, esp. if you apply early decision. not gonna give u a percent chance because youre still a junior and have time to improve or “deprove”

I’m going to have to agree with NYU2013 in some ways. He’s completely right, a 2400 is not an auto admit at any of these schools, 100%. In some cases, it’s not even a high chance. Mostly the SAT will affirm your intelligence. For most, it would rise a smart but lazy stereotype. Do I think you will get in? Yes. Why? Your SAT is great, good ECs, but look at your school. It’s a vital difference. A 3.4 in a top school like yours is like a 3.7 at a public. With that in mind, I can guarantee you that your rigor and school record will most likely make you a super competitive applicant because of your status.

Wow!!! Thank you guys so much for the info. And yea covering up my GPA was my goal. So I focused a lot on ECs and standardized testing. And now according to you guys, I think all that extra time might pay off!!! Thank you again so much, means a lot!! :)

bump 10char

So what’s the minimum GPA & SAT Score to get into Tisch or Stern? I want to get in for both :/

@NYUObsessed1995 I got into Stern with an 1830 SAT. Don’t ask me how, but I did.

@NYUObsessed

You can apply to Tisch or Stern, but not both. I.e. you can attend Tisch, but not Stern or Stern, but not Tisch.
