Chance for Tulane

Hello, I’m currently a junior in high school in California. I’d really like to attend Tulane and plan on applying there next year, but I feel that my stats may not be good enough for me to get in. I was hoping that I could have a few suggestions on how to amp up my application.

-I have a 27 ACT score (I’ve taken it twice and received a 27 both times, but I’m going to take a prep class this spring that many have my friends have taken and it boosted their score to a 30-32, so I’m aiming towards at least 30 ACT)
-I don’t plan on taking the SAT. I took a few diagnostics and scored significantly lower in comparison to my ACT scores.

  • I’ve switched schools; freshman year I went to MHS, then switched to THS for sophomore and a semester of junior year, and then returned to MHS for second semester of junior year and will stay there until the end of high school.
-By graduation, I’ll have around 40 college units (THS did not offer AP classes, instead we took community college classes)
  • My GPA weighted should be around a 4.0-4.1, unweighted around a 3.75. My college classes don’t give me any extra weight, so my class rank, as of right now, is only 62/670.
  • Senior year, I plan on taking AP Gov, AP Bio, AP Stats, Anatomy and Physiology (I will get 6 college units for completion of this course), PE (for one semester), and Wind Ensemble.
  • Some of my extracurriculars are: Treasurer of my local People to People International chapter, member of Academic Decathlon for two years, Speech and Debate for 2.5 years, participant in Science Olympiad for 1 year, but co-started a team at the school I left, Concert Band and Marching Band member for 2.5 years, Book Buddy (taught young children reading skills) for 1 year, and played Varsity Tennis for 1 year and club Lacrosse for 1 year. Also, I attended a summer program at Hillsdale College in Michigan last summer and plan on applying to another summer program this summer, either there or at Tulane. I also help coordinate volunteers for my church’s annual Greek Festival, which is a pretty big community event.
  • I will be applying to major in Cell and Molecular Biology or Public Health and will apply either SCEA or EA to Tulane.

Thank you!!!

Actually you look like a pretty solid candidate. Yes, the 27 is a little low, but not disqualifying. Of course if you can get it up to a 29+ that will help a lot.

Be sure to attend the local sessions Tulane holds in your area (hopefully you live near one) next fall when they do them. In fact, you could even check and see if they are going to hold one this spring for accepted students that are still deciding which college to choose. I believe they let prospects attend those as well. Visit campus if you can, but if not that is OK. It also helps, once you learn who your admissions person is for your area, to establish communication directly. But don’t do that until the fall, because sometimes they change areas from year to year.

When it comes time to apply, having a well thought out and personal “Why Tulane” statement is important. Clearly there is some reason Tulane has caught your interest over other schools. Think about how you are going to communicate that in 500 words or less.

Good luck!
