Chance for UChicago?

My dream school is UChicago, but I also would like to know how my academic credentials stand in the admissions process in general.

GPA: 3.9531
HPA: 5.1777
Class Rank: 6/447
SAT: 2100
- CR = 690
- Math = 710
- Writing = 700
ACT: 33
- Reading = 33
- English = 33
- Math = 34
- Science = 31
- Writing = 10
SAT Subject Tests:
- Math Level II = 780
- Physics = 760
- Chemistry = 790

I've taken 15 AP classes, 3 dual enrollments, and have taken/and am currently taking 8 IB classes as well. I've received 3 Bs on my transcript, so would that hinder my chance for admissions in any way, shape, or form? Do I have a decent chance at UChicago insofar as my academic credentials go? I am an Asian male too, so would a school like Chicago discriminate me against my race and/or gender as opposed to if I were a different minority and/or female? Finally, do AP/IB exam scores matter much in the admissions process?

Please, any and all advice/feedback is welcome and appreciated! Thank you.

What are your extracurriculars?

Stats are useless. Tell us about your ECs and other awards/things you do.

Let me tell you this though: there are many people with much better stats than yours.

@Debater1996: I plan on making another thread for my ECs. For this thread, I just want info and feedback on my academic credentials.

@ezvcpg: You’re right. There are many other people out there with stats much better than mine, but that is why I’m relying on my ECs and my essays to carry me through.

So far so good, lemme see your EC’s and then we’ll talk.
Chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1550680-chance-me-indiana-university-usc-ucsb-bu-nyu-american-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

If those B’s were all in Junior or Senior year and in IB/AP classes, then they will very much so hurt you. If they were freshman year B’s, adcoms really won’t care. Having an upward trend in rigor and corresponding grades is very important.

Test score wise, your SAT is on the low side and your ACT is right in the middle. A 34+ would make you solid if you want a retake. Your SAT 2’s are very good.

Your race would not discriminate AGAINST you. It just wouldn’t give you any impetus in the admissions process. If you were, say, Hispanic or African American then it would help you.

AP/IB scores are important because it shows the context in which you are receiving your grades at school. If you’re a straight A student and getting 3’s/4’s on all your AP exams (I’m not familiar with IB so no comment on that), then that shows that your classes are rather easy and that your school has grade inflation. If you are getting all 5’s on your exams and have some B’s scattered in your transcript, then adcoms will be more forgiving.

But of course, your class rank is also evaluated to judge how competitive you are. Do people in your class who are ranked anywhere from 1-44th get into UChicago? or does only the valedictorian in any given year get into UChicago?

Everything boils down to context. No one but yourself can really “chance” you.

OP didn’t post anything about ECs, so we cannot give any “chance” with a semblance of accuracy to him. Based on his stats alone, his chances are not looking good.

@Debater1996: I have multiple activities; so much that I can’t even fit it on the Common App. However, on the Common App, I am only listing the 10 activities on Common App that I am most passionateabout and that I plan to continue pursuing in college. I will list the activities in descending order of interest/passion:

1) Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Currently a blue-belt. It’s my biggest and greatest passion so far. Been doing it since the 8th grade. Although it might not be as “respected” or looked highly upon as playing a musical instrument, for me, Jiu-Jitsu is my greatest EC passion and I plan to pursue it for my whole life. I find Jiu-Jitsu as my greatest passion because it is simply an amazing way to de-stress as well as learning how to defend myself without harming my opponent (Jiu-Jitsu uses submissions rather than strikes, and as a Pacifist, this martial art style suits me).

2) Science National Honor Society: I am co-founder and vice-president of my school’s SNHS. I am also the captain of the materials science and astronomy teams for this year’s Science Olympiad. I am also instituting a tutoring program that will help other students who are struggling in the sciences.

3) Commissioner’s Academic Challenge (Florida’s fancy version of Quizbowl essentially): I was the only junior to make the team last year. This year, I am the team’s captain.

4) SECME: I have been involved in SECME the past 3 years now and last year, I was captain of the club’s Brain Bowl (again, like Quizbowl) team and was the only team at my school to place (3rd place) at the SECME Olympiad. This year, I am the club’s secretary and I am in charge of all clerical and organizational duties. I am also Brain Bowl team captain again for this year and I plan on making us achieve 1st place at this year’s Olympiad.

5) Youth Conservation Corps: The summer before senior year, I was an intern for the Youth Conservation Corps at this nature center at which I volunteer and for 8 (paid) weeks, I learned conservation ethics and wildlife biology and worked with the nature center’s biologist, collecting data and performing extremely laborious task in the hot Florida sun.

6) Congressional Youth Cabinet: This year, representative Ted Deutch started his first Congressional Youth Cabinet for the 2013-2014 school year. Basically, the CYC holds meetings throughout the year to discuss national issues and to raise political interest and awareness among youth. Because of the CYC, I have been strongly inclined towards pursuing a minor in political science (my majors being mathematics and physics).

7) Global Club: I am the founder and president of my school’s Global Club, a club that is dedicated to making a global impact via the local level and community. Some of the events and things I sponsored are soup kitchens food drives to feed homeless people and hungry children from lower socioeconomic families, hosting car washes, trash pick-up in our local city, and finally, acting as a liaison to provide community service opportunities to the club’s members.

8) Morikami: I am a volunteer captain at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. It is my job to ensure the safety of the other volunteers and that they are doing their jobs. I am also being exposed to and learning Japanese culture as I volunteer here, giving me cultural awareness and a broader world perspective.

9) Key Club: I was the treasurer of my school’s Key Club, the largest club at my school, and I had to handle the dues of over 100 members in the club and make sure that the money was allocated properly and that the club maintained a stable budget. Key Club is similar to Global Club, but my school’s Key Club focuses mainly on special events rather than usual service.

10) Haiti Relief and Aid: One summer, my father and I went to Haiti to help out the people there. For two weeks, my father and I stayed there and I was there, I bought food for and played with the orphans at the orphanage at which we stayed and at the same time, the orphans and our caretakers would teach us about Haiti’s culture, history, and their lifestyles too. I plan on doing more outreach programs like this in college. After my experience here, I really learned to appreciate what it means to be living in a blessed country like the U.S. as well as gain a better understanding and view of what the world is like.

Now THESE are the activities that I will be putting on my Common App, because they are the ones I am most PASSIONATE about. I have a billion other things going for me, but I only want to put the ones I know that I love to do and that I will continue to pursue in college.

I also have 279 (recorded) community service hours. However, I have another 60+ hours I need to receive from an institution at which I volunteer and then put it on my transcript, effectively giving me about 340+ hours total.

@StarWarsMan: Are we ready to talk? lol

We’re ready to talk. Giving you a low reach man and I’m only being conservative with the low reach because… well… it’s UChicago. You’re low reach to low match.

Understandable, but as I said before, I am sure that everyone else who is applying there is exactly the same. Everyone who is applying there pretty much has similar stats and EC levels, and this is where the essays will come in. The essays will most likely be the deciding factor in my acceptance/rejection. Also, I plan on taking the SAT again this October to boost my score. After much practicing, I feel confident and I’ve been scoring in the high 2200s and near 2300. After that, I’m sure test-wise, I’ll be set. Thanks for your advice again.

Oh wow, I thought low reach and low matches were a bad thing lol. I just looked up what those terms mean, and a low reach equates to a 40% chance and a low match equates to about a 75% chance. I’m actually happy about those chances lol. XD Thanks again @StarWarsMan.

GPA/ class rank = solid

SAT = very low

ACT = solid

EC’s = OK (mainly because of lack of awards/ honors)

My 2 cents: low reach

chance me back? (my thread is floating around up there)

Your chances look pretty good I suppose- I’d say mid-reach, but good luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1550923-chance-unc-nc-state-centre-college-gwu-tulane-etc.html</a></p>

You seem very qualified. Pretty much as qualified as one could be… Again, these top schools are crap shoots. The essay is where it will be… Low reach… Be passionate

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I really appreciate it!

What else would any of you recommend I do at this point, besides writing good essays?

Your extracurriculars are stunning! It seems that you’re a leader amongst your peers. I second StarWarsMan. While your SAT is definitely on the low side, your ACT seems alright. Despite the Bs, hopefully your schoolwork shows an upward trend throughout all four years.

I think what really makes it/breaks it are the essays. Have you started on those? UChicago is one of those schools that turn down even stellar students due to their essays. I’d say with a decent (by that I mean unique) essay you have a good chance. I’m hoping to apply there as well. Good luck! (:
