The reason my GPA is so low is because I maintained a 3.0-3.2 for my first two years of high school(weighted), as I was dealing with some emotional trauma, but was able to raise it to a 4.2 my junior year(Weighted), but the unweighted GPA stands at 3.03. I would love to live in Chicago, and the University of Chicago is my dream school, but I am worried my GPA would hinder my likelihood of admission. Do I have any chance of being admitted? Is there anything I can do to help my case?

Have you tried studying for the SAT because your practice scores are much lower than UChicago’s 50th percentile. What other colleges are you interested in.

I’m interested in mostly schools in the north east-northwestern, NYU, northeastern, boston university, Georgetown, American university, George Washington, university of Pittsburgh. Id really love to live in Chicago, as I’ve visited in the past and it’s an amazing city.

No offense but it seems that you need to get more realistic about the colleges on your list. Most of these schools have average UW GPA’s that are above a 3.5 GPA. You should attempt to find some safety schools. Click on the College Search tab at the top and utilize the Supermatch feature to find colleges that may be a better fit for you. Even though UChicago puts more emphasis on its essays than GPA and testing it would still be a major reach for you since it has such a low acceptance rate. You need to start looking at colleges that have higher acceptance rates (as in they accept almost all of their students). At the present moment you are not competitive enough. I’m not saying you can’t get into some of these schools who knows maybe you’ll write essays and bring other things to the table that will make the schools overlook your GPA. Who knows?

@Mitchistheman97 regardless his/her gpa is still really low. Essays and letter of recommendations will help if they are excellent. I would say that @gong339 should still apply since it is his/her dream school but to not get his/her hopes up.

My problem is I have high scores, which exemplifies the fact that I am intelligent, but my GPA is low due to dealing with a lot of issues in my personal life throughout high school. Is there some way I could have my counselor work that into a letter of recommendation? Or put it in my personal essays ?

From what I’ve read on CC a lot of people have said that the guidance counselor will typically mention personal problems that have hindered the student in his/her letter. Some also say that you shouldn’t put it in your personal essays unless a question asks something about a similar situation. It makes it seem like you are making excuses.

Do you have any schools that you know you will get into? You don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket and end up without a college come April.

I’m probably going to apply to Drexel university and Syracuse, and if memory serves me correctly I don’t believe university of Pittsburgh is the most selective college in the world. If I could find another college that had a higher acceptance rate near or in Chicago I would definitely apply there.

@Gong339 Anything is possible, but I would highly doubt that you’d get into U Chicago with that GPA. Syracuse and DePaul are better choices, more like matches I’d say.

@gong339 search it up for yourself on google. Typically if you type in “school name class profile” it will show the stats. Make sure the stats are for the undergraduate class though.

I had a friend who had been in the same boat, with great test scores and National Merit scholar title, moderately okay AP scores and whatnot. She was smart, arguably being the most intelligent person I know in English and the Arts. However, she had a horrible GPA-even getting a near F at one point.
She applied Early Action with what I presumed to be a perfect essay, but was deferred. She eventually found out she didn’t get in.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you truly demonstrate you’re their type of student, you will be good. You have better scores than my friend and you seem passionate with all you’ve gone through. Just show it and kill your essays. Good luck!

Your ACT score is good, but could be a little higher for U of C. The upward trend in GPA is good, but may not offset the overall low GPA. I agree with others, don’t mention your emotional trauma in the essays, leave it for your guidance counselor to expand upon.

What were your grades in the UC Berkley classes? If they were all A’s can you attach the transcripts to your application?
