Chance for Yale SCEA, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, etc.

Hey everyone! I recently decided to apply SCEA for Yale. Also, chance for Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Penn, Harvard, MIT, and Cornell. Don't be afraid to be honest! I know my resume is not even near perfect.

Rising senior, Asian (Indian) from a very, VERY diverse public high school in NY

SAT: 800 M, 800 W, 740 CR (2340 Comp.)
ACT: English 35, Math 35, Reading 34, Science 36, Combined English/Writing 35, Essay 12, COMPOSITE 35
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 800 US History, 780 Chemistry, 780 Biology E, 770 World History
APs:
10th grade: Biology 5, World History 5, Environmental Science (Self-study) 5
11th grade: Chemistry 5, US History 5, Statistics 5, English Language 5, Psychology (Self-study) 5, Human Geography (Self-study) 5
12th grade schedule: Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Physics B, US Government, Calculus BC, Spanish Language, English Literature
GPA: 103/100 Weighted, 97/100 Unweighted (We don't do 4.0 based)
Rank: 1/~350 (this will not change)

Awards:
2-time regional Science Olympiad medalist
2-time district-wide Writer of the Year
National AP Scholar
National Merit finalist (most likely)
~15 or so school-wide achievement awards in different subjects, generally insignificant
Air Force Award
RPI Math and Science Medal

ECs w/ leadership positions, if any:
Asian Club (biggest club at school), (former treasurer, former secretary)
Mock Trial (secretary)
Science Olympiad
Science Research (very involved, exclusive class)
Model UN
Foreign Language/Science/English/Social Studied Honor Societies
Mu Alpha Theta + Math League (president)
National Honor Society (secretary)
Also, I co-wrote the AP Environmental Science syllabus for the class which will be introduced this fall, with the AP Biology teacher.
Volunteered 50+ Hours at local hospital (patient care/front desk)

Summer Activities:
2008: AP Summer Academy at school (6 week intensive program preparing students for AP classes)
2009: Mathematical Modeling Program at Mercy College
2010: Currently doing research at a NJ hospital (in the cardio lab assisting with clinical trials, also get to see open-heart surgeries!)

Work:
Worked at local Kumon Center since September 2008, about 7 hours a week

Essay: should be great, probably either about my experiences at Kumon, the diversity I have experienced at my HS, or my experiences doing research at the hospital)

Recs: AMAZING. I know my guidance counselor very well. One of my teacher recs will be from my AP Bio teacher/Science Research mentor/APES syllabus co-author/NHS advisor/Science Honor Society advisor (basically everything short of a principal) who I have grown a close personal connection to. The other will probably be from my English teacher who I had in 10th grade and will have again for AP Lit in 12th grade.

That was really long, but thanks for the consideration!

Bump, c’mon guys!!

Awesome stats broseph. IMO you should have a good shot at Harvard, MIT, Yale (its just gotten so arbitrary these days)and a terrific chance at Columbia, Penn, Cornell, and JHU.

Chance me back?

This says nothing about you. Regional Science olympiad medalist? In most of the events, you get a bronze medal at the minimum just for showing up. AP scholar? Lol ok, way to stand out. Merit SF? Its not like ANYONE who doesnt have a 210 PSAT+ have it…

Asian club? Really? Thats going to be your mean EC? I can just keep tearing up your EC…

On the other hand, SAT is good but not superb. Make no mistake, there are other asians who have higher scores. Good rank.

I am just curious, what is the caliber of your school? if you are from a top tiered school which sends many kids to HYPSM a year, you will get in just on academics (no need for EC).

Lol alright dude, I get your point, no need to tear it up. I appreciate the honesty however. Obviously, I know I have no hook, and that was why I wanted to get chanced. If I had really amazing ECs, I would know it, and I wouldn’t feel as much of a need to put my stats up here.

To answer your question, my school is very low-caliber. It prides itself on its diversity, but nothing more. We have a 67% graduation rate. The class of 2010 has 1 student matriculating to HYPSM, and the Class of 2009 had about 7 or so.

Good chances overall. My advice would be to avoid SCEA at Yale based on data collected by silverturtle. In the RD round, try to communicate your unique characteristics. Also, try to pick up some last minute academic awards to back up your academic profile.
Good luck!

If I’m not mistaken, silverturtle is also applying Yale SCEA. Thank you for the advice though.

Most likely acceptance at Johns Hopkins.

^Thank you; that’s very comforting. I feel like it’s all up in the air, especially with my application. It’s a competitive one, but I have accepted that it is not something that has never been seen before.

Honesty is different from gratuitous harshness. -.-

Anyways, I won’t venture to chance you, but I noticed this bit in your summer activities list:

Essay topic. On this. If you can get across your enthusiasm for your research work just on a chance thread, you’ll probably have a lot to say in your essay. The syllabus thing (for AP Environmental Science) is also interesting and fairly non-standard. I would emphasize that (it’s much more interesting, and says so much more about you than many ‘standard’ ECs like MUN, Scioly, &c).

Thanks for the suggestion. If you look at my essay section, I mentioned the research as a possible topic. I’m most likely going to go with that.

Great job. My daughter just finished her sophomore year at Yale and was accepted early with SAT scores of 2340, and not nearly the extra curruculur activities you have. Yale is a great place. But be careful, your ideas for essays are cliched. They sound like what you think every admissions officer wants to hear. The best essay topic I’ve heard about was kid who wrote about working in a garage changing tires (it was a girl, not my daughter). Not that you should do that, but find something real and not politically correct, or how diversity changed my life.

That’s great advice. Obviously, I’m still in brainstorming mode for the essay, but whatever I do choose to write about, I will be sure to inject with my own personality to spin it up a little. Could you rephrase the last sentence? Are you saying that I should write about something that is not politically correct?

True. But, he’s part URM with stats far better than yours. If you see his data, you can see that unless Asian applicants have 2400/4.0/2400 stats, they have very less chances of getting through in the SCEA round.

PrincetonDreams, to whom are you referring? I’m not part URM, and the rest of your statement doesn’t make any contextual sense.

Oh, I should’ve clarified. I was responding to this:

“If I’m not mistaken, silverturtle is also applying Yale SCEA. Thank you for the advice though.”
