I joined Team Duke in 8th grade and have been a member ever since. It is not a school club or organization, rather a community one. It was started by John Wayne's (yes, the cowboy who died of cancer) son under the idea that everyone is an athlete. Members are asked to fundraise for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation through whatever sports or activities they enjoy. As a result, I took up running. In junior high, I was never much of an athlete, one of the slower actually, but I trained a lot and have increased my fitness dramatically. My passion for running expanded into a passion for triathlon. Since joining Team Duke I have competed in 20+ races (two of which were half-marathons and two Olympic Distance Triathlons). Every race I do I wear my Team Duke jersey. I also have raised over $1000 for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation by asking for donations for each major event I do.
I co-founded and was co-president the John Wayne Cancer Foundation at my school sophomore year. Now I am the president of the club. Our main objectives are to raise cancer awareness and to raise money for the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.

Other Comments:
I am part of a mentor program at my school where students are partnered with mentors in their field of interest. My mentor is a radiologist whose specializes in breast radiology. She treats and sees many people with breast cancer, which again ties into my central focus of cancer. Also, my uncle has survived severe melanoma. I hope to promote this focus on cancer in my applications especially since I am considering becoming a oncologist (cancer doctor).
I think I have very good potential for a good teacher req because my chemistry teacher, who I have had for both regular and AP, is actually a cancer survivor and supervisor of my club. I received student of the semester from his class and have consistently preformed well.
I also plan to take a class at UCI this summer.
I am a white female from a public school in California with unfortunately no hooks.

I also plan on applying to Brown, Vanderbilt, Williams, Harvard(?), Stanford (?), Yale, Princeton, Cal, UCSD, UCLA, UVA, University of Washington, UC Boulder (?)
Thank you!
