chance low gpa high test score junior?

Hi to all,

Background: I'm a junior at a top Illinois public school. I skipped the second and third grades but went back a grade for athletics when I transferred to a public middle school. My ADHD really affected my freshman and sophomore years as it went untreated, but with medication I've really been able to buckle down and get some decent work done.

Ethnicity: Hispanic

GPA: (W on 5.00 scale, since classes were all honors/AP)
Freshman--3.80 (My freshman year was completely mediocre--see above--with a 3.80/5.00 while in all honors classes. I think that was mostly due to the ADHD, an elongated acclimation period and my immaturity compared to my peers.)
Sophomore--3.70
Junior--4.20 (first sem, if finals go well could be 4.40 or 4.60)

Class Rank: somewhere in the top 10 or 11%

AP's: Junior--AP English Lang/Comp , APUSH
Senior--AP English Lit, AP US Gov't, AP Comp Gov't, AP Econ, AP Bio, AP Stats, AP Calc AB

EC's:
-two year class council member
-baseball soph/jun--getting recruited by Ivies, smaller D1 schools, multiple D3 schools
-club/travel baseball every summer
-swimming frosh
-1st chair alto sax in wind symphony frosh/soph
-1st chair alto sax in jazz band frosh/soph
-writer on school newspaper frosh/soph, production editor jun
-writer for the teen newspaper of a major, big city paper (very, very selective)
-member of Tri-M music honors society
-Project Lead the Way pre-engineering courses frosh/soph/jun
-captain of/leading scorer for scholastic bowl frosh/soph/jun
-italian club council member jun
-eucharistic minister and minister of care for Archdiocese of Chicago

Honors:
-National Honor Society jun
-Foreign Language Honors jun
-English Honors jun
-Science Honors jun

Schools: UIllinois engineering (legacy), SMU, Northwestern (probably ED), Notre Dame (huge legacy, my family's donated $$$$$ for whatever reason), Yale (baseball recruit), Harvard (baseball recruit), Miami University (Ohio), Wisconsin, Indiana, Vanderbilt (may ED), Wake Forest, Washington & Lee (baseball recruit), Boston College, Boston U, Tufts

Standardized Tests:
-AP Comp--36 (36 R, E, S; 34 M)
-SAT--not taken yet, hopefully somewhere above 2350
-PSAT--223
-SAT II: not taken yet

Recommendations:
-Editor for my newspaper
-School psychologist/counselor
-Baseball coach

Thanks, everybody!

sports + legacies seal the deal…

forgot to add Boston College and Boston U. thanks!

well your gpa is not the strongest, but your act score and psat are very strong. u illinois, smu are most likely in, i’m guessing they are safety schools?? yale and harvard are obviously extremely competitive, and your gpa isnt in the average range, but i’m sure the baseball will help, but they are still a reach. but i’m sure if you mentioned your adhd in your application they’ll take that into consideration. wake forest probably in, miami, wisconsin, and indiana in. vanderbilt higher match most likely. best of luck please chance me!

Illinois, SMU, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Miami are my “safeties,” if you can call anything with my GPA a safety. according to some of the Ivy coaches, my test scores help a ton and my GPA is just a bit lower than their athlete average.

UIllinois engineering (legacy) - safety
SMU - safety
Northwestern (probably ED) - high match
Notre Dame (huge legacy) - safety/match
Yale (baseball recruit) - reach
Harvard (baseball recruit) - reach
Miami University (Ohio) - safety
Wisconsin - match
Indiana - match
Vanderbilt (may ED) - reach
Wake Forest - match
Washington & Lee (baseball recruit) - match
Boston College - match
Boston U - match
Tufts - high match

Great stats, good luck!

thanks! bump?

Your GPA is kind of bad, but as long as you’re in the top 10% of your class, you’ll be fine. Colleges tend to look at GPA in context.

If you’re a baseball recruit, whay are you going beyond Y and H. The coaches can figure out your index and tell you if you’re in.

yes, i’m in the upper band. but i intend on applying to other schools just in case i end up not playing or have a bad season this upcoming spring and/or summer–one can never be too sure, especially with a sport as unpredictable and injury-causing as mine.

bumpsky and hutch?

bumpity bumpity bumpity bumpity come on guyz!

You seem to have commitment issues with your issues with your EC’s. You only have 8 AP classes which is a major problem. You only have four awards when I had at least 10 by your age. Your recommendations are weak and you only got a 36 on your ACT. But I got a 38 on it. It was the perfect score at its time and age. It’s time for you to step up your game and get some good grades. I went to Harverd back when it was an all-right school. Some of the kids there were pretty dumb. I also turned down Prinston and Calumbea.

hahahah I kinda <3 you… my buddy got a 45 and got into harprinceford, sooo suck on that

You have a decent chance for most of your mentioned schools. Yale and Harvard are the only two you probably have to considerably work on your essays for. One problem your GPA may present is that colleges may think you are intelligent, but is not willing to take on challenges. And admission officers understand that no one is too smart for their college; only hard work can get you good grades after high school.
