Based on your intended ED choice, this site may offer you further ideas:
Simmons, Mount Holyoke, Barnard and Smith are examples of women’s colleges with excellent psychology programs.
How about Vassar/Skidmore/Sarah Lawrence? They seem to check your priorities and are reach/target/likely.
Adding my vote to look at Vassar. Like @Catcherinthetoast, I am an alum, psychology/biopsychoogy (now called neuroscience) double major. Very supportive of many nontraditional lifestyles. No greek life, some sports but not a Rah Rah school. PM me if you have questions.
As noted since the Princeton Review note about schools not to attend - that Vassar does not have a strong grade from Campus. Pride. One would have to review the criteria.
Tufts, for example, is a 5 as is pitt, mentioned by OP. Wesleyan is not rated. Vassar is a 3.5. If you look at their rating, they earn 1 star for lgbtq retention.
While I’m not a fan of these rankings, since others brought up Princeton Review and this is a site solely focused on lgbtq life, I’d suggest OP run their list for research.
The home flagship - UMASS - also a 5.
Good luck to OP.
This is where reviews and ratings are meaningless. Vassar is a great fit for this student, very LBGTQ friendly, very crunchy granola, excellent psych dept. Ticks all of the OP’s boxes.
Oh, and as an aside, in addition to my double major, I was also getting elementary ed certification, but decided for senior year I’d rather do a senior research thesis and apply to grad programs than student teach. But all the opportunities were there.
OP as a Vassar alum I can assure you it is a very LGBQ friendly community with a long history of supporting diversity.
Actually there is a subtle difference worth noting. Reviews like Princeton Review is a survey of actual LGBQ students while Pride Index is a self reported school criteria.
“The Campus Pride Index rates colleges and universities based on self-reporting of LGBTQ-friendly policies, programs and practices , such as non-discrimination statements inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, gender affirming health care, LGBTQ+ peer mentorship programs, campus safety trainings.”
Versus Princeton Reviews surveys results from 165,000 students to the following question of how strongly students agree or disagree with the statement;
“Students treat all persons equally, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.”
OP I would believe first hand experiences and consider VC as it does check all your stated boxes. Lastly, I base this suggestion on your interest in Brown where my son attended. I have spent considerable time at both schools and can assure you they have a lot in common.
I think in a lot of cases they are meaningless but so maybe was the list presented b4. They rated that area a 1 star and other areas not so great. I’m not sure how campus pride creates their rating. I assume they used a data subset from somewhere. But it’s disingenuous for someone to put up one pub but then to dismiss another if it doesn’t present your school in a positive light.
It’s certainly an index targeted toward OP’s concerns that they might want to review for all their schools (not just Vassar)and as I always suggest to kids, it’s always a great idea to visit or at least talk to a student ambassador who can best answer questions related to your specific situation
A lot of people throw a lot of shade at various schools which is unfortunate because so many schools have great attributes with zillions of kids pursuing their dream. So if people are being told to look at pubs, they should review all that are accessible and on point. And not just those that insult others but not their own.
Thx
Seconding Mt. Holyoke. I visited with my D24 two days ago and it seems like potentially a great match for you. Proud to be a gender-diverse women’s college, and many gender-non conforming students thriving on this campus. I was impressed by how supportive it seemed. You would most likely receive merit aid, and they have a Masters in Teaching program you might check out as well https://www.mtholyoke.edu/academics/find-your-program/master-arts-teaching-mat
I will not beat this to death and there has been a note above about talking to the OP, but I doubt the Campus pride takes into consideration the comfort and support both the students and faculty have and give to each other.
And Smith offers some merit scholarship money too. Merit Aid | Smith College
And also very worth looking into is the 5 college consortium in which Smith and Holyoke participate. Great opportunity to take classes at Amherst, Hampshire, Smith, Holyoke and UMass Amherst Home | FCI (fivecolleges.edu)
Or Vassar’s participation in the 12 college exchange, where you can spend your junior year domestically at one of 12 schools Twelve College Exchange in Brief – Dean of Studies (vassar.edu)
Participating Institutions
- Amherst College
- Bowdoin College
- Connecticut College (including the O’Neill National Theater Institute)
- Dartmouth College* (including the Dartmouth-Thayer Dual Degree in Engineering program)
- Mount Holyoke
- Smith College
- Trinity College
- Wellesley College
- Wesleyan University
- Wheaton College
- Williams/Mystic Seaport Program in Maritime Studies
D23 was accepted at Clark with great merit award not the top one but it was half the cost of tuition. They do have a full ride scholarship which you should look into. Clark also offers a 5th year tuition free Masters. Seems like a good fit for you.
D23 is enrolled at Mt. Holyoke and it seems to check most of your boxes. Faculty has been available and eager to meet with D23. Smaller classes, lots of activities, and clubs. She also received a sizable merit award.
With respect to women’s colleges, Wellesley might be another worth considering.
Please PM me if you are thinking of this. I have personal experience with NECC.
This seems like a good way to create a fresh list of ideas in this forum. At some point, though, it will interesting to see the greater group of colleges you have been considering.
It sounds like Clark is everything you are looking for. As long as you’ve visited and loved it and it’s financially comfortable, I think you’ve found your safety. Brown and Wesleyan are reaches for anyone, but you have the stats and I think you show a strong commitment to your future goals. With a strong essay and great LOR, I think you stand a great chance of at least one of them.
OP also shows a serious interest in school reform and research which aligns very well with the schools they are targeting.
