Match me - rising junior looking to start college list

Demographics

  • US domestic (MA)
  • Public high school
  • Mixed white/Korean
  • Queer & non-binary identifying but may apply as female if I am not yet out
  • Rising junior

Intended Major(s) - considering:

I’d like to be a middle/high school teacher, administrator, or guidance counselor, or do something with counseling, so I’m primarily interested in psychology and education. Most likely I’d teach English or creative writing if I ended up teaching, so I’m considering a major in one of those things as well. I haven’t ruled out types of LGBTQ+ activism or political work as things I’m thinking about too.

GPA, Rank, and Test Scores

  • 4.0 unweighted, 4.52 weighted (can’t find information on how we weigh them though)
  • no class rank or percentage
  • 1380 SAT, but that was without studying as a freshman; I plan on studying hard and taking it again this year (aiming for something in the 1500s)

Coursework

  • Sophomore year: AP Calculus BC (5 overall & in AB subscore)
  • Junior (upcoming) year: AP Physics 1, AP Language, AP Spanish, Multivariable Calculus

Awards

  • Regional Gold Key - Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
  • Summa cum laude (Gold medal) - National Latin Exam x3
  • Taekwondo 1st degree black belt

Extracurriculars

  • Vice president of our GSA in sophomore year and will be president junior year
  • National Charity League
  • Member of GSA Student Leadership Council
  • Attended the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop the summer before my junior year
  • Volunteer for local LGBTQ+ youth activism organization
  • Two years working as a lifeguard/camp counselor in the summer
  • Piano for 10 years
  • Dance for 8 years, member of Senior Company

Cost Constraints / Budget

I am lucky enough to be able to afford most schools, so while lower-cost schools would be preferable money isn’t a huge barrier.

I’m looking primarily for smaller, selective liberal-arts type schools in the New England & surrounding areas. I’ll probably shoot my shot at Harvard and Brown with no real expectation of getting in just because admissions are so wild. Loved Kenyon while I was staying there, so I’ll probably apply there as well. No real idea what to look for in terms of safeties/targets, so any suggestions would be totally appreciated!

While it’s good to start thinking about options, IMO it’s a bit early to start building a list. Your junior year grades and re-attempted SAT scores will matter in making the right selection.

I don’t think this matters from an admissions viewpoint. It does of course matter in terms of selecting a campus and a state that provides a welcoming and supportive environment, but admissions are a different matter.

Best wishes!

You might be well suited to Wesleyan, Vassar, or Kenyon.

Emory, NYU and CMU popped into my head immediately. Then I looked at the creative writer list.

Maybe American?

Enjoy your junior year and do well. Maybe come back to your list in the spring after you get you SAT score. Good luck.

Oberlin is worth checking out. Very LGBTQ friendly and artsy.
