Okay I know this is a very top school, but my intended major is mechanical engineering and I do want to see if the odds are in my favour. Questions are marked with a *

I'm a uk student doing the IB, bad GPA, I got a 2.9 during freshman year, constant 3.1-3.2s. I took the SATs got 2360. Now I'm considering going out and taking a few APs since the GPA is just terrible.

*If I take APs independently myself, does it count towards my GPA?

I would say I have a big passion in building, for example when I'm in year 8 (13 years old about) I modified a scooter (runs at 80mph), and for this Christmas I'm planning to my house to rely completely on solar power only by redesigning the roof with glass and solar panel, I would make a great effort to try convince my few neighbours to use my design as well, hopefully save some energy.

*If I'm able to get decent scores in the AP, and my project goes successful, do I stand a chance against MIT? How big? Is my in-school low GPA history a Big wreck to me?

deferral is only for early action and since you’re international, not applicable to you

NO ONE can tell that you will be 100% admitted

Your GPA is low but since you’ve improved (I assume) it may not automatically get you rejected.
I once read in an MIT blog that a couple of D’s is a deal breaker.

Are you asking if self-studying for an AP exam and taking it without taking an AP class will contribute to your high school GPA? You should probably ask your high school guidance counselor, but I’m guessing no.

Not even the admissions officers can tell you if you do or don’t have a good chance at MIT until they read your application within the context of the rest of the (potential) incoming class. Do your best on your application essays and your final year(s) of high school and try not to stress out. I know it feels like college admissions is the beginning and the end of the world right now, but when you look back at the end of high school five years from now your memories will probably be with your family and your friends, not your application. Good luck.
