This isn't really a chance thread, rather more of a "Am I on track thread". I still have time to do more stuff, improve test scores, rank, etc

Sorry for the unprofessional layout and the ec's aren't all, just off the top of my head.

Also, would it be beneficial for me to join a couple more clubs this year, that way next year i can say i was in that club for two years?

And regarding ED, can someone explain to me pros/cons, and whether I should do ED if I want to go to Rice?

I was accepted via the ED plan this past year and my primary motivation to apply ED was this: Rice was absolutely my first choice school.

In short: If Rice isn’t your #1 choice, you shouldn’t be applying ED. If it is, more power to you; apply in november and hope for the best :)

Stop focusing on racking up “admissions points.” Do things that genuinely interest you, write about your academic & extracurricular passions and your application should stand out.

I absolutely agree with academician. I applied as a freshman and am currently waiting for my admission decision as a transfer. Do things that you actually enjoy so that you will have something you can write passionately about. If you choose to do ED, start your application as soon as possible (maybe even in the summer). At least glance over it. Ask for your recommendation as early as possible as well. Give your teacher ample time to write you a good rec letter and make the process easy for them by having everything prepared for them. You should also try to schedule an interview whether on or off-campus.

You look on-track in my opinion. Your SAT is above average, but it never hurts to retake it if you feel you can do better. There is also a little luck involved during the application process. Apply to a few schools.

I made a typo on SAT, it should say Math 740, I’ve got reading up there twice.

Regarding ED, I’m positive that rice is my #1 choice. However, as moogle pointed out, not everyone gets accepted and applying to a few more is better. My question is if there is enough time between December 15 and December 31st (ED admission deadline, and RD application deadline for most colleges, respectively).
For instance, could I just apply to Rice and then not apply to any others until I get (hopefully not) rejected from Rice? I’m asking because I’m not sure of how long the application process is, etc.

I’d say I’m doing what I’m passionate about right now, and you made me realize that the club thing I was talking about was kinda silly. Rather I’m going to try to get leadership roles in the things I’m already in and have been involved in for a while.

Would either of you recommend a campus visit (before summer)? I live about 3 hours away from Houston so it wouldn’t be a huge inconvenience.
Also how do interviews work, and if any of you has done one, any advice?

Prepare you applications ahead of time. Apply by the ED deadline but continue to work on your other top choices. Then all you have to do between Dec. 15th and Dec 31st is mail stuff out.

Sure. If you can do it easily, definitely visit.

You schedule an interview. Since you are close by, you will be able to do an on-campus interview where you come to campus and answer some questions. Advice? By yourself. Tell them who you are and what you think. Help them put a face and personality to your application.

So I’m still interested in ED, but I was thinking about it and I’m not sure it’s the best option. From what I gather, the ED acceptance rate is slightly higher, like 10%. However could it be the fact that the people who apply ED are those with better stats and chance to get into rice in the first place? Which wold mean that the competition would be much harder, and might offset the increased acceptance rate?

Also when does the common app open up? If you go to the website, it says the rice deadline has passed. I’d like to look at the essay prompts as early as I can.

Do you really really want to go to Rice?

Yes - Apply ED.
No - Do not.

Picking one or the other will not change your likelihood of getting in. In fact, Rice does not need to worry about you not attending if you are admitted RD.
