Chance me!...and I will name my first born child after you!..and Chance you back.

Hey guys, I'm a rising senior and was wondering If you could help evaluate my position.
I would like to do a psych major and pre med.

Schools I really like (as of right now):

Nothing is definite, but I especially like the first three

Duke
UPenn
Boston College
Northwestern
Cornell
Brown
Notre Dame

Our school uses a 100 point scale.
It is a decent public school in upstate New York, but nothing exceptional...Typically, we have about 5 kids a year go to Cornell, 2 or 3 go to other Ivies, and the rest of the class goes to a SUNY school or community college.

Currently, I am safely in the top 10 of my class (probably 5 or so out of 275)
I have around a 96/97 unweighted.

Our school only offers a handful of AP's, and I've taken every one that I have been able to. I have taken three so far (Physics, World, US), but will be taking four senior year (Macro, English, Biology, Calc). Again, I have taken all the ones that would fit into my schedule.

I have done extremely well in all of my classes (at least a 90) except for AP Physics where I finished with a 75 (This is a notoriously hard class with an awful teacher...and this was not a terrible grade relative to my classmates...)

My SAT is decent...just about a 2100...and I'm hoping that this will at least get me considered by some of the good schools. I am also taking the ACT in the fall..and think I can do fairly well on that (again, hopefully good enough to maybe be considered).

My AP's really aren't great...I get three's (except for a 2 in physics!). However, history has never really interested me and is not my strong point...and I'm not great at physics. I would say though, that I am very strong in english, language, biology, chem, math ect.

I don't have many EC's...I am a member of the Science Club, and I have done Science Bowl (jeopardy style science questions...). I am in the national honor society, as well as the math, science, and business honor societies ( I am also a year round varsity athlete (rowing).

However, I hope that I will really stand out to colleges due to some of my other activities...
I am a junior camp counselor for a couple of weeks every summer. I spend a lot of time volunteering at nursing homes around my area, and occasionally work at the local soup kitchen and the library. I am very active in my church community....volunteering is something that I really enjoy.

From these volunteering experiences and from my teachers, I know that I can get some great recommendations, and I can write a great essay...

Also, I have invented these really cool bracelets and created the machinery used to make them...I guess my hope is that this will portray some sort of ingenuity...

I also have some unusual hobbies...
I am interested, and licensed in Ham Radio
Although I row, I am passionate about cycling. I love the sport and collect bicycle magazines. (I don't want to row in college, but I do hold a world distance record for my age group...)
I enjoy metal detecting.

In summary, I feel that I have decent grades (except for Physics; my grade in that class drives me up the wall!)...I am just hoping that my volunteering and interesting activities/hobbies/being well rounded will get me considered somewhere. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

So...long story short, please provide...

Chances for all (ED and RD)

Really, thank you for your time. Please keep in mind that I will be happy to return the favor

Unfortunately, you don’t stand out too much unless your recs and essays are awesome beyond measurement. But you do stand a chance. Duke, UPenn, Northwestern, Cornell, and Brown are low-reaches imo. I think BC could be your safety. I wouldn’t worry about AP’s too much since they’re not taken into account as seriously as other factors (only a tiny bit). Also, improve your SAT scores and you should have a great chance.

chance back =)

^ I’d have to disagree with the above poster.
This is just my opinion but you invented a machine to aid in the production of bracelets? I’d say that sticks out (unless it’s something that a child can put together and looks like an easy-bake oven) and will help your chances with admissions and that sounds like it could bs an interesting essay topic. You are definitely competitive enough to get in to most of te schools listed so good luck and have fun in college!!

Chance back? You’ll be the first! =P

If you have to bs your way through an essay regarding a topic, that topic is not worth anything at all, BabyRudy.

Please don’t be one of the thousands of applicants to write about volunteering. Plenty of people do that. I suggest you find a unique experience to talk about (one of your unique hobbies)…unless volunteering is your true passion etc. In that case, shoot for it.

Again, grades are awesome but to seriously increase your chances, increase your SAT score as well, or do great on your ACT, either one works. Your EC’s are mostly clubs and volunteering. A lot of applicants do that. What is your passion? You need to show that in your activities, I think. Plus, I don’t think I see any SAT II scores up there? Did you take any?

I missed your post on making bracelets. If it’s a sophisticated, innovative machine, that would be amazing.

Overall, you do stand a great chance, but it could be higher. I still stand by my previous opinion. But you can definitely get into many of your chosen schools.

I could be being extra harsh but don’t blame me. CC did that to me =P

Hey, thanks for the honesty Crimsonuser…I totally agree with you and thank you for your thoughtfulness. Yes, I did take 3 SAT2’s…none of them were great and were in my ‘weaker’ subjects…I have been working hard this summer and will do fine on a retake. Thanks!

From your stats/resume Boston College looks like a match and the others all look like low to mid/high reaches. I would put a safety school or two on your list, just in case.

@crimsonuser I was wondering where you got that “BS” mentality from. The “BS” in my previous post is supposed to be…well “BE”

Gotta love typos and how they can change the context of things so quickly! Again Good Luck to the OP!

I’m with jshain, Boston College shouldnt be too difficult for you, but most of the others (Penn, Cornell, Duke) are somewhat reaches, but i still wouldnt be surprised if you got accepted to any of them.
I’m also with the others, the bracelet thing is very unique and could really help you stand out, giving you a leg up on any applications. Overall, your stats are reasonably solid, certainly good enough to get you into BC, and not too far short to get you into any of the others.
